RBordua,

Yea, I've been doing some searching and came up with the same info that you have. The switch between Hoff and Haaf is certainly understandable.

If all the John Hoff families are one-and-the-same, Elizabeth had 10 children (assuming John V is one of them). Still possible due to early deaths and the dates of all 10 children do seem to line-up. I tried Ancestry.com with the names of the children and came-up with nil which is, again, understandable with the girls and might suggest early deaths of the boys (Valentine and Phillip, 1860, Lancaster).

1870 Census (Marilla) lists John Hoff from Baden, Elizabeth from Bayern, presently Bavaria. My guess: they probably met and married in the USA. My earlier message was incorrect when I stated that most in Baden were Catholic. I meant to say that Bavaria tended to be more Catholic but things still seem to hold true with JV's grand daughter being RC. Religious preference, in my mind, is often passed down through the mother.

Check out 1850 Census for NYC, Ward 6: John & Elizabeth Hoff with sons Henry (b. 1848 NY) and John (b. 1849 NY. Birth dates for John, Sr and Elizabeth are off by 3 years but still a possibility.

Do you know what the "V" stands for? Possibly a clue.

Do you know this JV Haaf ? b. 12-31-1938, d. 9-15-1992 MN.
(see Ancestry SSI index).

I have some info on Haaf immigration dates into the US. This John, AKA Johann, doesn't seem to be on my info but my stuff may not be early enough.

A final note: a lot of Haafs presently live in Lancaster NY. Try picking up the phone, introduce yourself and cousin Laura and see what happens. Some of the most fun of genealogy, in my experience.
Good luck. James (not Sally) Haaf.

I believe the four census records are the same John Haaf born around 1824/1825 in Baden Germany. His wife was Elisabeth Maas. Her name is listed on John V. Haaf's Minnesota death notice as his mother. As you wrote prior, her obituary lists John as being in Minnesota and the other 6 children living in New York. Between the 1860 & 1870 census records under John Hoff, there are 7 children listed taking into account misspellings & inaccurate ages/birth dates. The oldest child listed being Valentine Hoff who I believe was actually your John V. The other children are Catharine, Phillip, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Wilhelmina - not sure of the spellings.

I have just started to find the christening, marriage, or death notices of some of the daughters.

The other son, Phillip Haaf, and his wife Fannie had a son John Haaf. He married Effie May (sp?) Treat and their children were Ruth, the twins Elmer & Raymond and Lila. Lila is my maternal grandmother and she still lives in Erie County, New York.

Yes, the Haafs in Lancaster, New York are part of my grandmother's family. I will probably see some of them at the family picnic coming up in a few weeks. And I will let Gram and my aunts and uncles know about your friend Louise.

That's fantastic! Your Grandma Lila and my dear Louise are second cousins! I will contact you outside the thread for your address so I can send you a photo of Louise to share with your family at the upcoming picnic.

In addition I have scans of a charcoal drawing of John V(alentine) Haaf (1851-1943), a photo of him and his young family, his obituary and a picture of his gravestone. He and his wife Katherine M. Kaufmann married in Chaska, Carver, Minnesota in 1880. He farmed in the Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota area and they there raised a family of 10 children. The Haafs managed the Clear Lake Hotel from 1899 to 1909 and later moved to St. Cloud. Kate died suddenly and unexpectedly on 24 Jul 1924 of a ruptured gall bladder at her home in Clear Lake, age 68. John lived for awhile at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged in Haven, Sherburne, Minnesota and died in Clear Lake on 31 May 1943 at the age of 91.

If Elizabeth Haaf Heydman was married to Charles Gotleib then she was my grandmother. She was Catholic and would have lived in Red Wing Mn.
