My name is Roger Haack. I found your email while searching the internet on “Julius Haack”. I too am looking for ancestors and wonder if we’re related.

My great great grandfather was Julius Haack. I know virtually nothing about him, other than that he was from Germany, and not even the name of his wife.

His son, the only child I know about, was Louis Emil Leopold Haack, born May 24, 1855 in Bergen, Brandenburg Germany. Married Sophie Gundelach (born abt 1857 in Neustadt, Germany. Died in 1886 during childbirth.)

Louis remarried Emma Johanna Catherine Bebensee (born Mar 23, 1862 in Wandsbek, Holstein Germany).

They had several children. One was Julius August Henry Haack born 1894 and another was my grandfather Paul Claus Wilhelm Haack, born 1896.

As to immigration to Nebraska, not too much is known.
There is a good record that Sophie Gundelach immigrated on 25 May 1883. But we think Louis came in 1882 sometime. Probably Louis came over in 1882, and then sent for Sophie in 1883.
Thanks in advance for any information that you can share.

Cheers,
Roger Haack
Lawrence, KS
Yes, I will be glad to send you anything I have to help us both! I have at least three photos to send, but I haven't scanned them yet and my husband is on the desktop right now. Actually, my family is from Waynesboro, PA, but Jacob, Lena's father, lived in York. Then his son, Henry Andrew, moved around and finally settled in Waynesboro, where many of us still are. I, however, live in Waynesboro, VA. My dream goal is to track Jacob back to his origins in Germany. I would also love to track down a photo, but it doesn't sound like that might come from your side, even if we are connected. I cringe to hear of anyone destroying records and photos!! The Birmingham, AL and FL connections must mean something, don't you think? If my husband EVER gets off the desktop tonight, I'll scan those photos and get them off to you ASAP. Keep in touch!
Judy

It all sounds very familiar except for the woman's name which possibly could have been corrupted for some weird reason. I have seen this record and wondered. The immigrant Germans and Prussians were big on name change and secrecy. My mother thinks there was a Henrietta somewhere but unknown if other family member or in mother's name.
My Fredric and Helen were married in St Louis, lived in Birmingham after their only daughter married but also had a home in FL.
But while we show Helen as from PA, my mother's recollection is Waynesboro.
Helen's daughter's husband destroyed all records so all we have to go on is old memories which contain little family record. Helen's granddaughter is now 90 and shortly we can no longer use her memory and all persons to ask will be gone on our periphery.
It is possible your link and mine are the same but we need to check.
Would you be willing to share your information so I can check with my mother if anything rings a bell.
The photo would be a huge assist to show my mother and see if it could be her mother and grandmother.
Looking forward to a response and you may contact me at the email listed below.
Barbara Hatton
genesis2me@gmail.com

I have a Magdalena Haack ("Lena"), whose maiden name was Maria Magdalena Niedentohl, who married a Fred Haack in St. Louis, MO in about 1881. Lena was born in York, PA. They must have had a daughter, whose name I do not know, because I have a photo of them with a little girl. They also seem to have had some connection to Birmingham, AL and possibly Florida. Do you think there could be any connection?

Yes I did, exciting news. I have yet to find the ship manifest, but now with a new name to track, maybe we can knock down that brickwall.
You have long suspected that they were one in the same.
But with privacy laws, it may not be possible to gain access to a medical record such as that.
I suspected a connection between this family and the Geneseo family, rare name, and remember Minnie the mother appears in Geneseo on the 1900 census.
I was dissapointed at not being able to find anything in way of photos or records when my father in law died, I was hoping to come across something. Hoping the cousins in Arizona have some items left from Emma.
I'd like to have a copy of the picture showing the Haack's,
I believe it was from a family reunion?
Hi Jill....
It's been some time since we last talked. I don't know if this helps or not, but Ronald Mann, now deceased, did remember going to Iowa to visit extended family.
There was nothing in way of relevant material to aid in our search when we cleared and prepared his home to be sold.
However, another relative states that any of Emma Haack Mann's belongings could be with the Mann family in Arizona.
We are going to place a call to them and see if anyone has anything significant to share.
Lee

Karl,

Have you found any more information on Bernhard's daughter, Franciska, or son, Richard. On the immigration record of Bernhard and Bertha, was there a Wilhelm listed with them? (Possibly a brother). I can't remember where I found Wilhelm. I am still sure that my Ida Haack, wife of Charles (Karl) Nowak (Nowack) was a sister to Bernhard. I believe they came from the same area in Poland. My new email address is bevie@att.net.

Ida Haack's death certificate shows a William Haack listed as her father. Have you found any info on the Haacks in Poland or other Haacks who are related in the U.S.?

Bev Baird

I basically know nothing about this line and the spelling of the name could be any; i.e. frederick, fredrich.
This man was my g-grandfather and my mother knew next to nothing about any of her grandparents.
My mother says he was born Aug 1856 in Kentucky and died 1935 in Florida.
I see a Fred H Haack born in Missouri which makes more sense to me as ours lived in Missouri with his wife and children for a bit and we know my grandmother was born in St Louis, MO, the youngest child by ~15 years. This child told her children her mother Helen was French/Austrian background from the Alsace region.
He was married to a Helen Theresa Niedenthal according to our info.
This is what is available to trace a history.
I do have an mtDNA score on my mother to match through the women back to Niedenthal or a derivative thereof.
Thank you.
genesis2me@gmail.com

Hi Yvonne:

I am not sure how much help I can be. I have been pretty unsucessful thus far in trying to trace my Grandfather. My grandfather was Heinrich Haack, born in Germany but way before your grandfather was born. He came to the United States before WWI. There are some Haacks that came into Canada during WWII and then migrated down into the United States, in both Wisconsin and into Iowa. My grandfather was in his 80's when he died. I was but 5 years old so it would have been about 1955 when he died. My grandmother was Johanna Hagelstein born in 1891 in Lemkenhafen Fehmarn.

I can trace her family back over 700 years. I do know that my grandfather supposedly came from Heil Germany. He also had children from a previous marriage when my grandmother married him. All of his children were in the United States and some may have fought in WWII but as Americans. A cousin perhaps or perhaps a nephew. It was common during those times to name a child after your brother or cousin. I am afraid that is all I really know. I only have one Aunt remaining on that side and she is in her late 80's.
She lives about 1200 miles away from me. We do talk on the phone about once a month, so I will ask her if she might know something. I would like to ask if you might know what religion your grandfather was. It is important to me to know my heritage as I am sure it is for you. And I have some very mixed signals from all quarters on this. If you would like to email me directly that would be ok. If not I will understand. I sincerely hope you find what you are looking for.

Patricia, California

I am descended from a John Hawk who first paid tax in Franklin Co. PA in 1786. Recent dna tests have shown a close link with a Victor Hawk of Oklahoma, who has family history relating descent from an Andrew Hawk who came from PA . This leads me to research Andreas Haack of Maxatawny and Rockland Townships in Berks Co. If you visit Victor's Pennsylvania page at http://victorhawk.com/pa.htm you can see an updated report on Andreas' descendants, the will and a lot of other stuff which we have recently posted.
Please contact me.
Bill

Illinois Haack family

My father was John Kenneth Haack. He was born in 1931. He died in 1996 in Watertown New York. He was drafted into the Army sometime before age 30, when I was born. He married June Doyle. I was told my father was from Morris Illinois and my mother is from Joliet Illinois. I remember meeting my father's father when I was very young (less than 10). At that time he was an old man in a wheel chair. My father always told us he had many brothers, but I don't remember meeting any of them. My father found out in his 50's that he had been adopted. If anyone can help me untangle this web, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Re: HAACKs in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (dithmarschen area)

My grandfather was Heinrich Haack who married Margaretha Hagelstein. She was from an island called Fehmarn on the Baltic. She immigrated to the u.s. in 1903. Which is part of the Schleswig-Holstein area. It is an island which is now connected by bridge to Germany proper and was considered part of Prussia. I too am searching for my Grandfather's roots. I have been told that he came from an area called Heil which is supposedly in that same area. He married my grandmother in Wisconsin, and was sponsored by the Hebrew Society for his journey to America. However, we were never raised in the Jewish religion. I have only one remaining Aunt who is now 84 and when I tried to discuss this with her she told me that,,,as a family thing it was neer discussed to be quiet about it because it was a secret that we were Jewish. I don't quite understand because I can trace my grandmothers line back to 1357 on the island of Fehmarn and to this day all the churches on the island are Lutheran. Although there was persecution of the Jewish even when my grandmother came here I still don't quite understand how they could give up their faith that they grew up with. I don't know if this will be of any help to you but I wish you success. Please let me know....we may be related as some distant cousin. Pat

Haack and I believe he is the same Henry Haack that was institutionalized in Moline in 1899, where he lived until his death. I am just trying to either connect my Henry to this Frederick or connect to another Henry so I can move on to other possibilities. any insight would be wonderful!

Jill

YES!! I have Henry and Minnie having the following children: Anna, Frederick Carl, Minnie, Emma and Augusta. Anna was my Great Grandmother- (married Fred S. Davis). Frederick Carl had a son named Paul. I would LOVE a copy of that picture. So many Fredericks, Henrys and Minnies-drives me crazy. Are you sure the Henry in the asylum is Frederick Theodore's brother? Obviously they are related somehow if you have a photo...I believe I probably have a photo of Paul and his Dad Fred and just don't know it. Paul married a Dorothy and they had a son Laree-I tried to connect with him but no luck.
Thanks for the photo-can't really make out any faces but the couple with the little girl standing in front of them look familiar... thanks for the pic! I have posted quite a bit on my Haack line on rootsweb-obits and stuff. I also have the Oakwood cemetery book so would be happy to look them up for you.

Jill

I didn't know you were raised there-the only thing the book gives is name date location and if you have been in person it is redundant. I am in California/Washington State so have never been there but my DAVIS line showed up in Geneseo in 1870 census for Edford out of Herkimer, New York. My line of HAACK was in Illinois by 1890, the youngest daughter-Augusta- was born in Geneseo. The HAACK married the DAVIS line and then moved to Iowa-

I had someone go to Oakwood and take pictures for me of the Davis line. Yes, some stones are pretty hard to read.

HAACK, mother Charlotte THIEL.

will scan a copy and send

HAACKs in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (dithmarschen area)

I have finally made a breakthrough in my HAACK family research, and as is always the case, breaking down one brick wall creates at least 2 more. But these are good problems to have. With a lot of help from kind cousins and neighbors of the family in the old country, I have found a document made presumably from church records by what seems is a professional genealogist in 1935. It outlines my line from my George Jacob Haack back a few more generations. If anyone thinks anything or place looks familiar, please contact me.

Georg Jacob Haack:
b. 03 Feb 1839 Westerdeichstrich
m. 29 Mar 1863 Wesselburen, to Wiebke Dorothea Harder
d. 21 Aug 1884 Bruhnsdorf
bur. 24 Aug 1884 Westerdeichstrich

Claus Johann Haack
b. 22 May 1802 Hedwigenkoog
m. 26 Apr 1829 Buesum, to Elsabe Katharina Krage/Kraage
d. 16 May 1848 Westerdeichstrich
bur. May 1848 Buesum

Johann Haack
b./bap. 19 Nov 1760, "of" Hedwigenkoog
m. 1790 Wesselburen, Wiebke Classen
d./bur. 25 Nov 1841 Hedwigenkoog

Johann Haack
b./bap. 20 May 1723, "of" Hedwigenkoog
m. Margaret Mars
d. 28 Jan 1788 "of" Hedwigenkoog

Nickels Haack (that's what it looks like to me)
b. circa 1695 "of" Hedwigenkoog
m. circa 1720 Antje Thomis
d. Aft. 1720

For the documents themselves, please see my website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/
(choose "surname", then click on 'Haack' from the list)
