Classification: Obituary
Bernard Edward Haack, son of Otto H. and Nellie (Tow) Haack, was born June 4, 1929 in Fenton, Iowa. Bernard served in the United States Army during WWII. He served in Panama from 1946 until 1948 in the Army Battery B Automatic Weapons Department where he was in charge of a gun crew for which he received the World War II Victory medal.
On June 19, 1948 Bernard was united in marriage to Lavonne Preston in Jackson, Minnesota. To this union ten children were born.
Bernard and Lavonne resided on their farm where they raised dairy cattle. Bernard enjoyed gardening, dancing and playing games, especially Wahoo and Rook. He truly loved spending time with his family, playing croquet or fishing on Sunday afternoons, playing a game of softball or playing his harmonica and having a family sing along. Bernard enjoyed riding horses and gave nearly everyone in Cylinder a ride on his horses.
In 1977 Bernard retired from farming and he and Lavonne moved to Arizona where they made their home. In 1980 they moved back to Cylinder and started milking cows again.
Bernard was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg and a past member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Depew. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #192 and V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg.
Bernard died Monday, April 30, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Nellie Haack; a brother, Orvis Haack; an infant sister; two infant brothers; and a son, John Eugene.
