My Grandmother was Emily Gyte. She was born in Wombwell, Yorkshire in 1878. Her father Abraham was born in 1845 at Stanton Hillside, Derbyshire and was the son of James Gyte and his wife Ann (nee Staley). The family appear to originate in Youlgreave, Derbyshire. I have quite lot of information about them going back to the mid 1700s. Most of it has come from other people researching the Gytes and I have not yet had time to check it fully.

Hi...I noticed a good while back that there was one particular census in Edale Derbyshire 1851 or 1861 that as head of household was ___Gyte. No wife was listed..but there were a number of children. And included on this census were my gr gr grandparents...Thomas & Mary Hammond. (marys maiden name was Nightingale but that was not included). They actually resided in Tipton,Staffordshire...that's not all that far from Edale.
Have you come across them at all? I figure they were relatives and would like to know how they were related...maybe to his wife that wasn't listed or otherwise any possiblility...either connected to Hammond or Nightingale side? If you come across anything, let me know...Thank you for the response.

PS...The Nightingale families I am connected to were from Tipton and Derbyshire. My Hammond line was from Tipton & West Bromwich,Staffordshire.

Hello Judy
Sorry to be so long replying. I belive that the Edale Gytes are very distance relatives of mine. I have a small amount of information that was sent me by Liz Cooke, but no mention of the Hammonds. I have been looking for Liz's email address. I have it somewhere, but I think it is on my old computer and I forgot to tranfer it when we recently bought a new machine. When I find it I will forward it on to you so that you can get in touch with her. Liz belongs to the Edale Gyte family
Best wishes

Hello Joan
I wonder if you could help me, A number of years ago my late father told me that he believed that our surname, had some Dutch origins ?
His name was Roy, and was born in Wombwell Yorshire around 1917-18. He was the youngest of seven brothers, I have one Uncle still alive, his name is Reg and he lives in Nottingham. My father moved to Scotland after the second world war and joined the police force in Glasgow and retired in the mid seventies, saddly he died in 1989.
I myself live in a place called Kirkintilloch, Scotland and have an older brother who lives in Ripon Yorkshire.
I would be delighted if this information was any help to you in your quest, and if so could you furnish me with some of your research results as it appears that I am the only Gyte in Scotland
Yours Sincearly
Lawrence

Dear Lawrence,
Sorry for the delay replying to your message. We have recently changed our email address and so your message was not forwarded to us.
Your Grandfather Arthur Gyte was brother to Emily Gyte, my Grandmother. I am in touch with some of your cousins ie. Sandra Dickinson, Avril Roe, daughters of Horace, and Sid, son of Irving. Both Horace and Irving were brothers of your father.
Sid has also mentioned the Dutch connection but we have no proof of it. Sid says that two Dutch brothers came to England with Vermuyden to drain the fens in South Lincolnshire/East Anglia. He says that they then moved to Derbyshire to work on drainage in the lead mines.
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Your half cousin,
Joan
