Just came back from Chicago yesterday, and found out very little about my Grandfather, Fred A. Gjondla. Went to
Resurrection Cemetery in Chicago, and found his gravesite. Born 1889 Died 1958. Saw my third cousin (she's in her 80's)she was told he was from Jablonka. My Mother knows nothing about her Father. Fred's children were Charles, Anna(my mother) Fred and Marie(All were born in Chicago). My Grandfather married my Grandmother (Mary Lach) in Chicago in 1924. Thanks for any help.

Hi. In response to richter 160,
My great-grandfather, Karol (or Charlie) Gjondla was born in 1889 in Jablonka. His parents were Jozef and Terezia Gjondla. I haven't come across a Fred in the family tree--or I should say, a cousin who did an enormous amount of family research, didn't come across that name the last time I heard. I found out almost everything about my grandmother long after my mother died when my cousin actually travelled to Jablonka looking for the Gjondla family.
My mother, too, knew very little about her father's history except for a few family stories. The borders changed so much back then, too. My mother used to say she thought her father said he was Czechoslovakian. I understand the Gjondla family he came from is Slovakian. Do you know if your Gjondla grandfather was Slovakian or Czech? I'm curious how that fits in.

Thank you, Joanne. I'll look at the previous postings. Several years back, a cousin (our grandparents were brother and sister) actually traveled to Jablonka with her husband to look for the Gjondla family. All she had to go on was a faded return address on an envelope. When they arrived in Jablonka, they asked a woman walking by if she know of any Gjondlas. She pointed out a man walking toward them, down the street and he turned out to be a cousin! It's really a small world when you think of all the circles we're actually connected to.

I've just been dabbling in family history myself, so all this becomes confusing fast to me..But, no, my connection to the Gjondla family is through my mother's side. She was a Gjondla, born in Chicago, to immigrant parents. (But, my father was named Frank and he did have a brother named Fred. My dad would have been in his 90's if he were alive today. Both sides of the family lived in Chicago. Is your mother also from Chicago?
