My father came through Ellis Island at age 6 with his Gyles family. His mother was Ellen Gyles, and his Grandparents were Stephan and Julia (Baldwin) Gyles. This was in 1916. They lived in Broome County NY, but other members of the family lived in NY, NY and there were members of the family from what I understand came through Canada.

They Came from Annestown County Waterford, Ireland. A present day cousin in Waterford did contact me, and tell me that the Gyles family originally came from England.

He also said they became Catholic so that they could marry the local girls.

My great great grandparents in Ireland were James Gyles and Johanna Lonnard. I have not been able to confirm this but I think this James mother was Bridget.

I was always told that if I met someone who spelled it Gyles that they were related. (Several other Gyles have said the same thing). The Irish cousin did say and it happened to him, that the spelling Gyles or Giles, is all the same family.

I would like to figure out when an England Gyles went to Ireland. That may give a clue to my family.

I have more info if you are interested.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sheila (Gyles) McCormack

A recent sugggestion from some one from the Gyle board is that the names all come from Guille on Guernsey. This would figure as most of the Gyles in the UK seem to come from St Ives in Cornwall which about as far west as you can go in England and have a harbour. Most ofthe Gyles seem to be seafarers. Suggestions that these names come from the Viking settlers which settled the seabords of Europe in the 9th and 10th Century (eg Dublin is a Viking town). It appears that the CI have manged to trace their ancestry to this period of history.

I myself has been researching the Gyles family name for quite sometime now. My side of the family were from near Edingburgh in Scotland and my great grandfather moved to Jamaica in the West Indies around 1856-70. What I am sure of is that everyone in Jamaica with the name Gyles are probably related as it is a very uncommon name there. I have also been to Scotland on many occasions and could not find any tartan colors that bears the family name, but I also found out that there are colors and family logo emblems from England and that some Gyles were from the Worcestershire area. That is all I know right now but I am always trying to find out more. I hope I helped you out a bit. Keep in touch.

Could you tell me more about your great grand father who moved to Jamaica in the 1850's. What parish did he settle in and is he related to the Gyles of St. Catherine and St Thomas de Vale? I am also trying to research Gyles in Jamaica.
You can contact me.
Thank you. Please contact me Imalya2000@snet.net
