I am researching the surname, Gyle, no "s". However since all documents were handwritten in those days, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish a loop of an "e" with an "s". I have found a couple of my relatives listed with the "s" on the end of their names.
Most of the relatives that I have been able to find information on, have been born and stayed in Northern Ireland. They are all Protestants. However, in looking for the name, I found many listed in England and Wales and some in Scotland. I have a theory that the family I am researching, may have originated in England, and then immigrated up to Scotland. A small band of them left for Northern Ireland and settled in a community called, "the Scotch Quarter" in Carrickfergus. Thus my theory that they probably came from Scotland. To this day, there are very few Gyle's found in Ireland. I have found some in Scotland and as I said many in England and Wales. And as someone else mentioned, the majority of my relatives were Mariners!
Hope this helps a bit.
