Gylander Families in Canada

Just checking out this web site and spotted
the name Gylander, an unusual name up here in
Canada. My husband's great grandfather Nils
Anton Gylander and his wife Carolina Anderson
came to Canada in around 1905. They were
originally from Gideoberg, Sweden. I don't know if there is any connection. If you want to pursue this line just drop me a line.
I'd be happy to here from you.

To W Gylander

Thanks for posting a reply.

As you can see my name is Gylanders with an 'S' on the end.

I had not been able to find any matches with my name on the internet. Reading some letters that my Father had received from the US dated 1944 I noticed that my relatives called themselves Gylander, so I tried again. That is how I came to find PHarbin's posting who is certainly talking about direct descentants of mine. Unfortunately he or she has not replied.

In my line of work I sent a fax to a bank in Stockholm (I work in London). They rang back and in conversation asked if I was Swedish. I was surprised and pleased to hear that I could have Swedish or I believe Finnish ancestry.

Please reply on my email address if you could throw any light on my background.

Thanks and regards
Michael

Just read your recent e-mail. Was very excited that someone actually replied. Our line of the Gylanders were definitely from
Sweden and like I said in my first message came to Canada in around 1905. Nils Rudolph and Carolina had six children, Sven Anton, Agnes Maria, Jenny Eugenia, Fritz Angorius, Freda Otelia and Elof. I don't really know anything about Nils Rudolph's brothers or sisters or the name of his parents. But I do know his birthdate and the place of his birth. We did have a cousin come to Canada from Sweden a few years ago and it's interesting to note that he spelled his last name Gyllander and he lived in Gideaberg, Sweden. So, possibly we are related to you in some way, who knows. Have you done much family research? You said in your email that you work in London, is that where you live all the time? If you want to know more info about this line of the Gylanders I would be happy to give you more info, dates,
places, etc. just ask me or if you want to know something specifically I would be happy to help out. Well, until I hear from you I'll say good bye.

Hi Wanda,

Thanks for your interesting reply. Sorry for the delay in coming back but the website has been upgrading itself.

I must point out that this is the English branch of the Gylanders(s) family.

My grandfather Joseph came to England from Northern Ireland whilst his sisters and brother went to America. We don't know when he came here or why they went their separate ways. He would only have been a young boy when they went to America, so who looked after him and what happened to his parents is a mystery. He settled in Newcastle in the north of England and married my grandmother Esther. They had four children the first being my father also Joseph who was born in 1920, who I am pleased to say is still going strong. So all the Gylanders here are direct descendants of Joseph and Esther.

My father tried to trace my grandfathers First World War military records but it seems they had been destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. These would have been very helpful to us.

I would love to be able to trace something back to Sweden, thank goodness for the internet.

In answer to your question about me living in London, I was bought up in London but now live in Kent.

Hope to hear from you.

Hello Pat,

Just thought I would try to make contact again as your message is the closest that I have got to tracing my family in the US.

Surnames: Gylander
Aother descendent of NILS ANTON GYLANDER:

Nils Anton and his wife Carolina had 7 children. My great-grandmother was one of them.

My great-grandmother was Nils Rudolf Gylander's sister, Agnes Maria Gylander. She married Daniel MacDonald of Antignosh Nova Scotia in 1911 and they had four children,John, George, Rudolph, and Margeurite (who was called June) whom the mostly raised in Apponague, RI, USA. Rudolph MacDonald was my grandfather and he moved to NYC during the 1940s, married my Grandmother and they had two sons - one is my father, Larry MacDonald. He lives on Long Island, and I am Paula MacDonald Ferguson,38 years old and living in NYC.

It would seem that my fathers paternal grandmother (Agnes) and Wanda's husband's paternal grandfather (Nils) were brother and sister - and that my Grandfather Rudolph was likely named to honor his mother's brother Nils Rudolph.

Here is a family tree I found that someone else put together. It is an excellent resource for Gylanders (although I think there may be an error regarding Nils ANTON Gylander's wife's name.
