Seeking information on above who was granted land in VA in 1640. I would like to know what his wife's name was and where he came from in Wales.

The information that I've obtained identifies Hugh as the son of Sir Owen Gwynn, and the Grandson of Sir John Wynn of Gwydir Castle, Llanwrst Wales. My information shows his lineage is that of the Welch Prince's of North Wales. I to am seeking information on his wife and decendents, in particular possibly one of his GGGrandaughters Dolly Gwynn who married Edward Broaddus and lived on Gwynn's Island, VA in 1715. I'd be happy to share what I have, and hopefully you may have information that could help me.

Mr. Nickodem, I will forward your reply on to the other members of my "team" and see if any of them have any information on Dolly. I have come across her name before, but I can't remember where. One of our group had grandparents from Gwynn's Island and spent summers there. He knows a lot about it's history and people. E-mail me at gmparker@aol.com.

I know its 4 years later, but I just came across this msg re Hugh Wynn. I am sure by now that you know...the Wynne's of the region of Gwynned and the areas around the region, are decended from the Prince of Wales Rhodri Mawr. He was the the first prince that was able to come in control of the most land areas through inheritance, battle and marriage. He got control of Powys I believe, by marriage.Anyway, Rhodri was killed by the Danes sometime in the 800's I do believe. He was the ancestor of almost if not all of the decending Princes of Wales. Rhodri was the ggggreatgrandson, I am not sure how many greats of, the Welsh, King Coel Hen, who was, unbelievably, Old King Cole. Actually the lineage from Hen on down is pretty easy 2 track. Gwynned is the region, which is Gwydir is the castle which was also became the last name Gwynn, Gwynne, Wynne, Wynn, Winn, Winne. If I recall Gwydir ( pronounced something like whid-ear, then pro.whiin,an English translation of White. I have seen pictures of the castle and the inside too. There was a special on TV about haunted castles in the UK and there was Gwydir. They even had a shot to the portrait of the feared Baron J. Wynn, who had a reputation for being cruel. That is why the castle and a stream on the land nearby in haunted. I also saw it in a magazine...which I still have. The Wynns owned this land for hundreds and hundreds of years and now a couple have bought it, live in it, and are trying to put in back in good order. They found lots and lots of ancient stuff in the Castle, portraits, in kind of a storeroom and want to get things up and displayed. They have the castle open for tours and some of the people touring said the place gave them an eerie kind of feeling, and there were reports of folks seeing a man dressed in the period of John walking around and around the floor on a huge room of the castle, thinking the person was a prop and part of the tour, finding out it was not...anyway, I think it's kind of fun. I have read however, that if you visits Wales, one place to visit the the Chapel of the Gwydir, Gwynne, etc, estate. It was said that 500 or 600 hundreds years of the family are entombed in many beautiful alabaster tombs. Which accounts for the ability to keep track of the dates of birth, death and relationships of a whole lot of folks. I have read a lot about them in plain old history books relating to the formation of the UK, etc. In reference to Wynns Isl. in VA...I believe it was John W that was an early investor in Jamestown. He came over from Wales to see how his invesment going when he was in VA, his father, the old Baron died and he had to go back to Wales to continue the Barony and settle affairs. It was not clear if he came back. One of his brothers, I think this was Sir Thomas W, was William Penns personnal physician and came to the US with Penn. Another Wynn came with a Lord De La War, and we all know what happened there. I do not have all my stuff with me, so I could be wrong on a few things or a lot. Incredibly a friend of mine is also a Winn, and her cousing did a college thesis on the Wynn family lineage. Hers is more detailed from ths US on..I was surprised she could not find more ancient ancestos, which I had more info on...anyway, it's kind of fun Lynne
