Gwillim/Lilwall/Price/Rogers Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony & Herefordshire
Please see below details of my direct line as researched to date. I have a number of branches of the family that I have not listed here, which is under construction on the Genesreunited website.
For the record I am Robert Michael Gwillim b. 28th July 1955 at County Hospital Pontypool.
My Grandfather Edwyn (Edward) Wilson Gwillim, and Great Grandfather James Gwillim were both born in Upper Cwmyoy (Llanthony) Monmouthshire. They lived at The Court Farm adjacent to Llanthony Abbey.
James Gwillim became head of the household following the death of his father, my Great Great Grandfather Robert Gwillim in 1890.
My Children: Michael James Gwillim (b1985), Benjamin Robert Gwillim (b1995)
Parents: Edward Wilson Gwillim (b1929 Geelong Austrailia, his parents had migrated there in1926). and Betty Doreen Gwillim (nee Brown b1929). Married September 16th 1950 at Trevethin Church, Pontypool.
Fathers Brother, Royston Charles Gwillim (b1926 Geelong Austrailia), Sister Shelia Gwillim b.1938 Monmouthshire.
Grandparents: Edwyn (Edward) Wilson Gwillim b.1897 Upper Cwmyoy (Llanthony) d:1969 Cwmbran, and Mary Elizabeth Gwillim (nee Hatherall b.1896) d.1984 St Woolos Hospital Newport, both buried at Cwmbran Cemetry Llantarnam Road. Married at the Parish Church Llanwenarth Ultra 5th October 1925. My Grandfather had previously married a Mary Elizabeth Price (no other detalis at present) who died while giving birth, both mother and child died.
Grandfathers Brothers: Robert James Gwillim b.1892, William Arthur Gwillim b.1900, Sisters: Catherine Edith Gwillim b.1893, d.1921, Evelyn Jesse Gwillim b.1895, all were born at Upper Cwmyoy (Llanthony) and lived at the Court Farm Llanthony.
Great GrandParents: James Gwillim b.1860 Cwmyoy Upper (Llanthony), d.1926 Upper Henlan (Llanthony), and Eliza Jane Gwillim (nee Morgan b.1862 Aymestry Herefordshire) d.1922 The Court Llanthony. Both are buried at the Churchyard of St Davids Llanthony. Catherine Edith eldest daughter is buried with her mother Eliza.
Great Grandfathers Brothers: Tom Gwillim b.1858, Walter Gwillim b.1865 Upper Cwmyoy (Lanthony), Sisters: Ann Gwillim b.1856, Kate b.1862 Upper Cwmyoy (Llanthony)
Great Great Grandparents: Robert Gwillim b.abt1819 (Llancillo Herefordshire) d.1890 (Abergavenny), and Catherine Gwillim (nee Lilwall b.abt1825 Clodock & Longtown Herefordshire) d.1892 (Abergavenny). Married at the Registry Office Abergavenny 24th June 1856. (Unsure at present where buried, believe may be St Davids Churchyard Llanthony, unable to find any records of this at present).
Great Great Grandfathers Brothers: Phillip Gwillim b.1822 (Llancillo Herefordshire), Thomas Gwillim b1824 (Llancillo Herefordshire), James Gwillim b.1826 (Llancillo Herefordshire), Sister: Mary Gwillim b.1820 (Llancillo Herefordshire),
Notes: Father of Catherine Lilwall my Great Great Grandmother, is listed as Thomas Lilwall Farmer of Herefordshire on their marriage certificate. From other sources I believe, but not confirmed that Thomas Lilwall was married to a Sarah, no dates at present. It also seems likely that there were at least 6 or 7 children in this family all girls except for 1 boy. These children are listed as being christened in the following area's of Herefordshire, Clodock & Longtown, Lyonshall and Bacton between the years of 1800 to 1831.
Robert Gwillim my Great Great Grandfather, was previously married on 2nd March 1840 at the Parish church in Clodock Herefordshire to an Eliza Lilwall (b.abt1818 in Clodock & Longtown) d.1855 (Upper Cwmyoy , Llanthony). They were listed as resident at the time of marriage as Longtown, Herefordshire. Unfortunately their marriage certificate for some reason doesn't list the brides fathers name. From other information that I have collected Eliza and Catherine were sisters. It seems Eliza was christened as Elizabeth on 20th May 1818 in Clodock & Longtown, her parents are listed as Thomas & Sarah.
Children noted from the marriage of Robert & Eliza are: Mary Gwillim b.1842 (Clodock & Longtown), Robert Gwillim b. 1843 (Llanthewy Mon) John Gwillim b.1844 (Llanthewy Mon)), Jane Gwillim b.1847 (Llanthewy Mon), Phillip Gwillim b.1847 (Llanthewy Mon), Dinah Gwillim b.1852 (Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony), Ellen Gwillim b.1853 (Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony), There was also an Infant Child born 24th April 1855 (Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony), The infant is buried at the St Davids Churchyard Llanthony, and is identified on the gravestone as "The infant Child of Robert & Eliza Gwillim of The Court Farm Llanthony". From further investigation it has been found that the child was a girl and she was also named as Eliza, she died within a few minutes of the birth. The mother Eliza died a few weeks later on 13th May 1855 at The Court Farm Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony.
Great Great Great Grandparents: John Gwillim b? (believe Clodock & Longtown area of Herefordshire), and Mary Rogers b? (believe Clodock & Longtown area of Herefordshire). They were married on 3rd February 1814 in Clodock & Longtown Herefordshire.
(Father of John Gwillim is another John Gwillim of Herefordshire, father of Mary Rogers is a John Rogers of Herefordshire, I have no details on these individuals other than what I have currently listed.)
Some other detalis : (Not all fully confirmed)
John Gwillim b.1844 (son of Robert & Eliza Gwillim) moved back to the St Devereux area of Herefordshire about 1871. He married an Emma Price b1844 (Longtown Herefordshire). I have details that indicate they had at least 5 children, 4 boys and a girl. Benjamin Price is listed as the father of Emma Price.
Dinah Gwillim b.1852 (daughter of Robert & Eliza Gwillim) married a James Farr of Rowleston Court Herefordshire on 19th April 1876. Edward Farr (Farmer) is listed as the father of James.
My direct family lived at the Court Farm Llanthony, but during research I have found Gwillim's living at the Half Moon Public House Cwmyoy Upper Llanthony at the same time between 1871 and 1901.
There is also a name of another farm, Pool Hall Farm in the Llanthony area, and also a residence called Vishen again in the Llanthony area where the Gwillim name is listed. I also have some details of the Gwillim name in this same area during the mid 1700's, but currently have no direct links or connections at this time.
I am very interested in any connections with these places and also the Lilwall family from Herefordshire, and would welcome any details that may be around.
Regards
Bob

Re: Gwillim/Lilwall/Price/Rogers Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony & Herefordshire
Not sure if you are still researching, but there's a will extract online for Rev.John Rogers of Clodock that mentions his daughter Mary Gwillim. I am researching the Rogers for my cousin and found it yesterday.

Re: Gwillim/Lilwall/Price/Rogers Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony & Herefordshire
Hello Bob Good to hear from you as well. I am new to the scene so, I am curious as to what should be posted here, and whether we can correspond by our personal emails. For now, I will tell you that the family here has done a lot of research. We are descended from Robert Gwillim(born 1881) m. Gertrude Prosser. Robert being one of teh sons of John and Emma As a start for you to view(no thanks to me) the website www.ourroots.ca has a great section on the Gwillims who emigrated to Canada in 190? You will see there that I am Robert's granddaughter. So that is a start, and all other info I have, has been given to me by cousin Gordon's family. The author of the article in Our Roots Marj Englund is still alive. So that is a start, and the info that the family sent me was from Family Group Record/ MRIN--so not sure where that is located? You have done a great job on the tree! Here is a question Elizabeth Gwillim Simcoe, does she come in anywhere on the branches? I recall my cousin mentioning that she was somewhere-distant I assume? Fascinating life story-shall we adopt her? Regards and thanks for replying! We shall be back in touch I am sure Gail

Re: Gwillim/Lilwall/Price/Rogers Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony & Herefordshire
Hi Bob,
My ancestors include a number of Lilwalls from Herefordshire. I saw your post and thought I'd have a quick look to see if there was any link. I haven't found any connection to my family yet, but did uncover a few details that may be of interest to you if you haven't seen them already.
Found a couple of likely looking matches for your Lilwalls in the census records:
1841 Census - Hill Farm, Parish of Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire:
Thomas Lillwall, age 35, Farmer Sarah, age 37 Catharine, age 15 Thomas, age 12 Mary, age 10
All born in Herefordshire
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 427; Book: 16; Civil Parish: Euryas Harold; County: Herefordshire; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 8; Page: 11; Line: 24; GSU roll: 288820
1851 Census - Hunt(?) House, Longtown, Herefordshire:
Thomas Lilwall, age 55, born Michaelchurch, Farmer of 135 acres employing 2 labourers Sarah, age 59, Wife, born Clodock Jane, age 25, Daughter, born Clodock Thomas, age 21, Son, born Clodock Mary, age 19, Daughter, born Clodock
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1978; Folio: 663; Page: 5; GSU roll: 87379.
Besides the discrepancy in Thomas and Sarah's ages, these give every appearance of being the same family.
Cross referencing the above with the IGI turns up the following:
Children of Thomas and Sarah Lilwall: Elizabeth Lilwall, christened 20 May 1818, Clodock & Longtown Henry Lilwall, christened 16 Jan 1821, Clodock & Longtown Sarah Lillwall, christened 20 Dec 1822, Clodock & Longtown Catharine Lillwall, christened 21 Jan 1825, Clodock Jane Lilwall, christened 9 Mar 1827, Clodock Mary Lilwall, christened 11 Dec 1831, Bacton
There are also some matches for children born in Lyonshall between 1800 and 1812, but these look like they belong to a different Thomas and Sarah Lilwall (living in Lyonshall in 1841 census, Thomas born abt. 1776)
Also found on the IGI: Marriage of Thomas Lilwall and Sarah Price, 20 Nov 1817, Clodock & Longtown
and
Sarah Price, christened 30 Nov 1792, daughter of John and Mary Price.
The christening date is consistent with Sarah Lilwall's age as given in the 1851 Census.
Hope that's of interest.
The Lilwalls in my family lived mainly around the Kington, Almeley and Lyonshall area. They descend from William Davies Lilwall (b. 1818, Knighton, Radnorshire), son of William Lilwall and Jemima Davies. I suspect the name Lilwall originates from the hamlet of Lilwall, just south of Kington.
Regards,
Ed

Re: Gwillim/Lilwall/Price/Rogers Upper Cwmyoy Llanthony & Herefordshire
Hi Ed,
Thank you very much for the information you have just posted. The Thomas & Sarah Lilwall you have detailed would be my GGG Grandparents. Their elder daughter Elizabeth was the first wife of Robert Gwillim (1819 -1890) my GG Grandfather. Elizabeth died folowing the birth of a child in 1855, Robert later married Catherine her sister, it is from this 2nd branch of Robert's family that I decend.
Thank you very much for the info, maybe their will be a link that turns up in the future.
Regards
Bob
