Hi my name is Frank Kenward

I am searching my Kenward ancestry but am also researching my home city of Hereford, Herefordshire, England. As a result I am looking into lot's of old local newspapers, at present I am studying the Hereford Journal of 1770 to 1774. Some of the stories I am finding are fascinating, others are just basic information like a marriage or death, but the data may help you find a missing link. The data source is unique, I believe that there are no other copies of the Hereford Journal outside of Hereford if not England.

I would like to share my research with people who share the family names of the characters I uncover and might therefore be related.

I am working on creating a web site to celebrate life present and past in Herefordshire and would appreciate any information you could give me on the subject, or any information on the Kenward family tree. If you believe that you have an ancestor that lived in Hereford mail me the details and I will try and find any info on them, I cannot guarantee that I will be successful but I will try.

E mail kenwardfa@hotmail.com or frank-kenward@about.com

Oh yes what did I find in the Hereford Journal

Hereford Assizes

Monday last (27 August 1770)

JOHN TROTTER for stealing a cart gelding, the property of Mr JOHN PRICHARD of Madley.

EDWARD JONES, for breaking into the dwelling of WILLIAM HARMAN and stealing thereout several sorts of wearing apparel.

Both were capitally convicted.

Elizabeth the wife of the said EDWARD JONES, was tried for the same offence and acquitted. THOMAS HITCH, ELIZABETH CRADDOCK, RICHARD CRADDOCK, her son (who was brought as an evidence against his mother), THOMAS POWLES and JOHN GWILLIM were found guilty of several offences.

JOHN BOWCOTT, CATHERINE BARROW and DAVID WILLIAMS (who was brought on Monday last, from GLAMORGANSHIRE, by habeas corpus, for plundering a Dutch ship wrecked upon the coast) were acquitted.

The trial of MARTHA OAKLEY, for the murder of her bastard child does not come on till tomorrow morning.

And we can assure the public, from good authority, that the trial of CAPT. BOWEN, for being accessory before the fact, in the murder of the late Mr POWELL of Glanareth is postponed until the next assizes, but the trials of LEWIS LLOYD BOWEN and JOHN WILLIAMS for being accessories after the fact will come tomorrow.

If I find any more information on this character or his/her relations or name sake I will post it on familysearch.com, if you want me to search for another name or just want a chat, e mail me on the above addresses and I will be happy to reply.

Hello Frank,

I have read with interest your listing about Hereford, in particular with the reference to a John Gwillim. I am currently researching my family tree, they originated from Herefordshire.

I am also interested in the name Lilwall, also from Herefordshire. In particular two names Eliza ( christened Elizabeth), born abt 1818, and also Catherine born 1825. I believe they were sisters. Catherine married my G.G.Grandfather following the death of Eliza in 1855, she had married Robert in 1840 (Clodock & Longtown).

I would be grateful of any information that turns up during your research of Herfordshire, in particular on the names of Gwillim & Lilwall.

Regards

Bob

I couldnt get either of your email addresses to work...
I am researching my ancestors and interested in a Henry William (or William Henry) Gwillim, living at the Brainge , Woolhope Putley herefordshire (I dont think it is a misprint for the Grange). Born about 1781, poss married Elizabeth. Definitely had daughter Mary Elizabeth Gwillim, b about 1810 who married James Collins (b about 1800). My guess is he must have been a landowner and I thought therefore you might have come across his name as a magistrate or society news? Or maybe I am wrong and he wasn't a landowner, but the Collins family definitely were. James Collins' father was John Stratford Collins of Wythall Walford, Herefordshire died 1809. So equally if you had come across any Collins I would love to know

This is really very much after you posted your query, but I am trying to research my wife's family history.

Her maiden name was Gwillim and they apparently lived at Brainge (sometimes known as The Brainge, Braynes or Brainge Court) in Putley, Herefordshire. The family had lived at Brainge for many years and in 1703, the house was re-built by John Gwillim.

My wife is descended from Thomas Gwillim, a younger brother of William Henry Gwillim (born 1776 died 1852 and married to Elizabeth Ravenhill Gwillim nee Jones [I think]) who's daughter (and only child) Mary Elizabeth Gwillim married James Collin. They in turn had children, William Henry, later The Reverend William Henry Collins (b.1834), Rector of All Saints Church, York, John Jones Collins (b. 1835), Stratford Collins (b. 1837), Mary Eckley Collins (b. 1832) and Margaret Gwillim Collins (b. 1839).

I have lots more information and papers but have lacked the time to sort through everything.

It would be interesting to see whether your information ties up with ours..
