William Henry Gwatkin is the younger brother of my great grandfather James Charles Gwatkin.

James was the other half of the House decorators at 42 Cross Street, Abergavenny.

Their parents were Thomas Gwatkin and Ann Gwatkin (nee Saunders)

I am interested in finding out more information about the Gwatkin family in Abergavenny.

I am interested in William Henry GWATKIN. He was a second cousin to my great-grandfather, George GWATKIN of Goetre. I could not find him in the 1901 census for Abergavenny, although he is there in 1891, and also in Kelly's for 1901. How did you find him, please?

William is the younger brother of my great grand father James Charles Gwatkin. In the census records I had notice a large Gwatkin family in the Goetre area but have never linked it into my branch of the family tree. Have you more information on the links between our two branches?

Just to answer your message in the 1901 census William's family are recorded with the surname Gwalkin. Also their son's name is John Canavan Williams Gwatkin and not Inoc. This seems to be a typo/transcript error of Jno C.

The name CANAVAN is John's grandmothers maiden name. I have quite a bit of information on the SAIES side of the family if any one is interested.

William Henry GWATKIN married Annie Eliza SAIES 1889. Annie was the daughter of:

George Gwatkin of Church Farm Goetre (1855-1917) was my great grandfather and a second cousin of William Henry and his brothers, which makes us something like sixth cousins. I descend obviously, through the female line, George's daughter, Rosa Jane , (1887--1971) was my grandmother. But there is one male line of Gwatkins extant from this branch descended from Rosa's sister, Herbert, and some of his descendants, but through a female line ,still live in Goetre.

At least one of these current male Gwatkins is interested in genealogy. Back to pre WW1 days: my gr/mother thought well of her Abergavenny relations and sometimes reminisced about them, although as it was sixty years later did not give any of the details i have recently acquired through such correspondence as the present.

Very best wishes,
Clive Jenkins.

Apologies. rereading earlier e/ms reminded me that we had already established the second cousin bit.

Our mutual ancestor was Matthew Gwatkin c1759-1829
b Bryn Gwyn near Raglan and from c1787 a tenant farmer at Pen y Clawdd Court farm,Llanfihangel Crucorney.
I shall supply the full parallelfiliation when i have dug it up from the intense welter of genealogical correspondence in which have been engagaed over the past six weeks. But it was indirectly supplied by John Gwatkin gr/son of WH whom perhaps you know anyway as he must be a relatively close relation (please excuse the pun). I have never been in direct contact with him, but got it still indirectly from the extant Goetre Gwatkin of the Herbertine H line. best wishes, Clive Jenkins.
