Pamela,
I too am interested in learning more about the GWATKIN family of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales. Do you know the cause of death for James Charles GWATKIN?

My research brought me to the GWATKIN family via Alfred GWATKIN who married Elizabeth Ann MEREDITH in 1894 in Abergaveny. Do have more details on her ancestors, siblings, and children if you are interested.

Dear Ruth Ann, I do not know the cause of James Charles Gwatkin's death but his wife Clara died in 1939. On her death certificate it lists 3 causes of death. If you like I could e-mail a copy of her death certificate to you.
I have quite a bit of infomation on James and Clara including pictures which I could e-mail to you. I would be interested to have more details of Alfred an Elizabeth Ann. How are you connected to the Gwatkin Family? My connection is through James Charles Gwatkin marrying Clara whose father was my Great, Great Uncle Matthew Goodden.
Regards Pamela

Pamela,
I think I had something checked incorrectly as I only found your note of July 14th 2007 when checking the GWATKIN board for something else. Hopefully I have corrected that. Feel free to contact me directly.

The reason I wondered about cause of death for James Charles GWATKIN (and the date) is that two of his brothers apparently died of causes related to their work. Another brother, their father, a sister-in-law (Elizabeth Ann MEREDITH) plus her younger brother and her youngest daughter all died of phthsis (tuberculosis) or causes related to tuberculosis.

Yes, I would be interested in a scan of Clara's 1939 death certificate. What can you tell me about James Charles GWATKIN and Clara Theresa Jane Williams GOODDEN? For example, what are the names and birthdates of their children? A scan of photos of James, especially with his brothers would be helpful.

Alfred GWATKIN was born 13 August 1865 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales. He and at least two of his brothers worked together as painters and decorators. He died in 1911. He married Elizabeth Ann MEREDITH in 1894 in Abergavenny. She was the daughter of Henry Pitt MEREDITH and his third wife Ann EVANS. Alfred and Elizabeth had three children. Elizabeth died in January 1901.

1. May GWATKIN was born in 1896 in Abergavenny. I know nothing about her after the 1901 census.

2. I am still trying to find out more about their son Frederick Pitt GWATKIN, born in 1897. He did marry, but I do not know when or where or her name.

3. Violet Augusta GWATKIN was born in 1899 and died in June 1901, both in Abergavenny.

Henry Pitt MEREDITH is a brother to my great-great grandfather. I have found that in learning about the spouses and siblings of relatives, I often learn more about the individual I am researching.

Jocelyn,
I just became aware of this short note on GWATKIN message board asking if I received your earlier message. Apparently I had not checked something correctly. Hopefully now I have fixed that so a message comes when someone replies to a post.

I did receive a short note from you on Friday, July 13, 2007 at 8:43:03+1000 (my time I think) after contacting you directly about several messages you posted in previous years. Cannot tell from the time differences in Australia, United States, Daylight Savings Times, and GMT if it is the one you are asking about (or if you sent a second longer one directly to me with details). You indicated you were quite busy and would reply in a couple of months.

I am (slowly and carefully) building a website for my one name study of 'Gwatkin' and 'Gwatkins' at http://www.treesandstars.com/Gwatkin
At the moment I am working on the family of Benjamin, b. 1801 in Llangattock Lingoed, and Paulina Gwatkin, which includes James Charles, William Henry and Alfred and their offspring. If anyone is willing to contribute information or photographs to this part of the one name study, it would be much appreciated.
