Hi, saw your message asking where the name GWATKIN came from. I believe it is originally from Wales although I understand from older memebers of my family that our particular branch came from Goodrich in Herefordshire which is in England on the Welsh border. My parents also tell that there is a coat of arms bearing the GWATKIN name displayed on the outside of a manor house in Devizes, Wiltshire, England. The manor house is now used as the headquarters for the local fire brigade. - hope this is helpful.

You're both correct. The name is Welsh in origin, but became more common around the Welsh/English border areas. The name derives from Watkin, the G being added to signify 'son of' like 'mac' in Scotland. There are plenty of shops in UK that will send you our coat of arms and a more detailed summary of the name.

John GWATKIN - Charlotte Fincher TRIST
Hi Rob, In a recent find - my gg-g'father's aunt (above) married John GWATKIN (of Parc Behan, Veryan, Cornwall, UK) in 1814. Any connection ?? Thanks. Robert ( garc1@bigpond.com)

I would have to say yes. As far as my limited research extends, there are approx 1500 Gwatkins in the UK (purely from phone listings). BEcause of the unusual name, I think that most of them could be traced back to a common ancestor, probably around 1100.

I have been told there is a Gwatkin society in London run by a Lawyer who is tracing the family tree, but I have no details

Gwatkin Society of London
Thanks Nic,
I'll have a look about the web for it. Tomorrow, however, I am heading south for about a week and a half to visit some newly found relatives. I'll post any findings here. Thanks heaps.
Best wishes, Robert.

Is anyone working on Gwatkin in the US? A family diary says that my gg grandmother Mary E Burnham (possibly Taylor) married first George S. Ling from Suffolk England, then a Kingsbury and last Matthew Gwatkin in Michigan. He is listed in Calhoun county in 1860. and owned property in Reed City Michigan. There was a marriage on Aug. 13 1888 but cannot tell if it was Kingsbury or Gwatkin - she is listed as a widow by 1900. They are buried in Fowlerville Mi. His dates are illegible as the stone has sunk into the ground. Am hoping to find marriage record to see if there could be more information on Mary.--Her correct maiden name and place of birth. Either Devonshire or Cornwall. Thak You for your help. Betsi Ling Craven

Trists and Parc Behan, Veryan
Thought you would be interested in the following reference to the Trists and Parc Behan in The Parish of Veryan by Christine North:"In the latter years of the eighteenth century Jeremiah Trist, the vicar of the parish, inherited or purchased a considerable amount of land including property in Churchtown; Tregamenna; and part of the manor of Elerky comprising Trewartha, Polcuta, Caladrick, Calendra, Carne and Polcreek. He acquired Crohans, Pennare and land at Camels, and assumed the role of squire as well as that of parson. By 1810 he had built himself a new mansion which he called Behan Park. It was described as a "neat modern residence, delightfully situated on rising ground - the gardens, walls and appendages are all appropriate". It is still the most impressive house in the village."
