There was a Gwathmey family with Owen Gwathmey from Wales>Glouscester Co. VA as the patriarch who settled finally in a part of Louisville, Jefferson Co. KY called Middletown. This area was settled in 1797 and the Gwathmey family probably settled around that time.

I am searching for the connection. My great grandmother's middle name was Gwathmey. Her mother was Ella Frances Roan and her mother Elizabeth Temple. I think the Gwathmey's I need were related to Clark of the Lewis and Clark. Owen Gwathmey had a daughter named Elizabeth. Is this any connection? Please help!

There is a book you should get on interlibrary loan (or if you live in Louisville it is at their public library). It is called "Middletown's Days and Deeds" by Edith Wood, 1946. It has small histories on founding families of Middletown, Jefferson Co. KY. The Gwathmeys were one of these families. It should answer your questions about George Rogers Clark and the source of the name Temple, and provide you with a few pages of history. There are also cemetery records, etc. in it. This is not my family; I was working on making an index for this book. This book is such a great source for those with Middletown families (and most of these families married into one another, so the whole town was related I have found). I have tried to post messages on boards for people researching these Middletown families just to let them know that this book exists and is worth looking into. Good Luck!

I'm fairly new to genealogy and to this site, so I'm hoping you won't mind sharing information and some of your expertise with me. I have some information about an Owen Gwathmey, and I was wondering if you think this is the same person referenced in your post.

The information is in a letter written to an ancestor of mine, Catherine "Kitty" Anderson, in April of 1895 or 1896, from a Louisa A. Kemper. It states, "Ann Clark was probably born prior to 1734, the date of her father's death. Her niece Ann Clark was married to Owen Gwathmey 1772 or 3. Your line is through Ann Ian (spelling?) of Jonathan Clark & Elizabeth Wilson married in Drysdale Parish K & G County, 1725. Descended from a John Clark who came into Virginia between 1620 & 1630 says Senator English."

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Thank you so much for the tip. Did you run across the family if Edward Miller in this book? He had a wife Hannah. If I am guessing right, Hannah was a Gwathmey.

Sincerely,
