Can anyone identify the parents of Elizabeth Gwartney (1817-1880)? According to census records, her father was born in TN and mother born in KY.

Elizabeth Gwartney married Joseph "Seph" Eckart in 1836, and gave birth to my great-great Grandfather Jonas Eckart.

I am also descended of Micahjah.
I don't know where he or Elizabeth are buried, but 2 of their sons are buried in Jordan's cemetery in Harrison county. This is an old cemetery, but it seems the first burials were associated with the start of the church and so Micajah and Elizabeth would have been dead some years before.

My guess is on their land or in a cemetery in the proximity of Mauchport - or between Mauchport and Corydon.

I have a copy of the book "Our Heritage from the Gwartney's of Indiana," by Rebecca Sidwell. It was NOT published in 1922 but more like 1972 or later. I remember when it was done. My line does not match up with most folks on this thread, but I am "Lisa Reed" in the book, granddaughter of Muriel Gwartney Younger. I will be happy to do look-ups for folks. The book is available in the Dallas Public Library and at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City -- is not on microfilm as far as I know and doesn't circulate, naturally.

Micajah C Gwartney?

Happened to come across a record of marriage dated 4/24/1882 in Meade (county?), KY between Micajah C Gwartney and Nancy Squire.

Anyone know anything about this couple? Couldn't find them in any of the federal census reports but it's possible the surname was spelled incorrectly (not unusual).

I'm thinking the groom was likely a descendant of Micajah Gartney 1750-1818 . . .

Just can't let go of this family history!!!

Leslie (AZ)

I am a descendant of the GWartney line. My grandmother was Julia Elima who married Jacob Roll. Some theory is she actually the daughter of John and Lucinda Gwartney, Micajah's oldest son. Do you have any information on Elizabeth McGuffy. I keep hitting a brick wall. If you can point in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
How interesting I found George on the census for Osawatomie state hospital. I have a copy be patient and I will get it to you. I believe it was 1930. With a head injury I suspect he wasn't nice at times. Could explain Willie's behavior. I still have family in St. Joe mo and go there all the time. DO you know if your great grandmother calimed his body?? The story I heard was about the pony express and the nail into the head I haven't heard anyhting about a ranch. Brandon

Where did you get the info on head injury? That was a story my mother told me, but I have not found any proof he rode for pony express, His name is not listed in St. Joe as one of their riders. I also heard from another ancestor that he was a horse rancher and this is where a horse reared up and he fell off hitting his head on a nail. I think he is also the one who after injury would wonder off and not come home for months (maybe years) at a time.

George W. Roll married Emma Thompson (she was at least 1/4 indian). They had 6 children (5 girls - America Lillian, Anna Rachel, Nora Georgia, Edith Maria, Stella Violet and one son, William (Willie - who was not a very nice guy from what I have heard).

As for where I fit in - George and Emma are my great great grandparents. So it goes George (gg grandfather) then America Lillian (g grandmother), then Violet (grandmother), then Lillian (mother) and me.

America Hooten's father was Elijah and her mother was Rachel Webb. However, I do not believe that our Elijah was Elijah Reeves Hooten. I don't have my database open right now to give you details as to why I believe this, but I am 95% certain we are dealing with two different Elijah Hootens.

The Hooten line is my line also from the sense they would have been my grandfather's siblings spouses. I do have a lot on the Roll/Hootens. I know that William Roll and AMerica Hooten had a son George that died at Osawatomie State Hospital back in 1935 I believe. America's mother was a Webb and her father was Elijah Reeves Hooten and from what I can tell they were from Tennessee however William and America was married in Crawford Co., Indiana 1852 or 1856. Thank you for the information on the Gwartney girls. I have been trying to locate data on them can't find them. I have been able to go back further that Micajah however my basement flooded and that was some of the information lost and I have been trying to recreate---HELP!!! Get back as soon as possible inthe meantime I will pull out some more Hooten information. Brandon
