Gwartneys in Leavenworth, KS
Donald, At last, a Gwartney from KS! You and I descend from Thomas Orlando and Gilla Colvin Brandenburg Gwartney who settled in Kansas Territory in 1854. Our gr-grandfathers, Ephraim ("Doc") and Emmet were brothers. I'd like to compare notes. Please e-mail me at pdrobny@mail.uccs.edu - Thanks, Pauline

My father, David R. Gwartney was born in and still lives in Lansing. We must be related. Can you tell me things about my family that my father never has? Please help. You can email me at rdgrant55@hotmail.com.

I am the daughter of Leonard Everett Gwartney
I was SO happy to read your message!! I've visited this site before but somehow did not get into this message board. I'm OVERWHELMED with joy to have found people related to my father!!!! I was born Lesley Persis Gwartney 12/18/1935 in Los Angeles, CA. My mom, Persis A., and my dad were divorced when I was still a very young child. When my mom remarried, she had my name changed and my dad allowed me to be adopted by her new husband, Lauren Crawford. When I was in my early 20's, I located my father through the government. He'd been in the military and using his social security # they gave me the last info on him. He was in prison in WA for being in possession of stolen property (airplane parts as I recall). I also had a letter from a woman who was planning on marrying him. We lost touch with him when I moved from Japan to Hong Kong. After 13 years in the Far East, the trial was cold when I got back to the USA. Went to a local Mormon library looking for info regarding my father - only to learn he had passed away in Dec of 1985 in Colorado. My son grandson passed through CO last year on their way to MD looking for the cemetary listed on my fathers death certificate, but were unable to find it. Please, please, please - contact me. There's so much I want to know about my father!!! Thank you, Leslie.

DAWN: I'M GOING TO TRY TO E-MAIL YOU BUT THOUGHT I'D POST THIS TOO. YOU RESPONDED TO THE SAME MESSAGE AS I, BUT I'M SURE YOU'RE FAR MORE KNOWLEDGABLE THAN I IN THIS AREA BECAUSE I'VE HAD VERY LITTLE INFO TO GO ON. MY DAD WAS LEONARD EVERETT GWARTNEY AND I'VE ONLY TODAY LEARNED HE HAD A BROTHER!!! HIS SOCIAL SECURITY RECORD SHOWED HIS MOM AS NAN WELCH AND FATHER AS HENRY CALVIN GWARTNEY. MY DAD DIED IN CO IN DEC OF 1985 - HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE STATES HE WAS BORN IN CANADA. MY MOM, PERSIS (WHO IS STILL LIVING) AND MY DAD WERE DIVORCED IN CALIFORNIA WHEN I WAS STILL VERY YOUNG. HAD A BREIF PERIOD OF CONTACT WITH HIM MANY YEARS AGO, WHEN I WAS LIVING IN JAPAN, AND THEN WE LOST CONTACT. I AM OVERJOYED AT THE PROSPECT OF FINDING ANCESTORS ON MY FATHERS SIDE - THEY'VE BEEN AN UNKNOWN FACTOR FOR ALL THESE YEARS!!! I'M DIVORCED, LIVE IN LAS VEGAS, NV, HAVE THREE CHILDREN (ONE GIRL/2 BOYS) AND FIVE GRANDSONS. MY HALF SISTER, ARDATH, PASSED AWAY AT AGE 50 THREE YEARS AGO DUE TO CANCER. I HAVE NO PHOTOS OF MY FATHER OR ANY MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY. I'M STARVING FOR INFORMATION. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!! THANKS, LESLIE.

Hi Leslie, I don't know a whole lot about the Gwartney's. What is wierd though is that we lived in Japan for sometime as well. My mother, Marilyn Gwartney, ex-wife of my father, David Gwartney lives in Las Vegas also. I am not very good at this email thing but would be happy to tell you more, as much as I can. What year was your father born? My dad was born in 1941. His father's name was Charles Alfred Gwartney. Were you able to find out the name of your father's brother? Let me know. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Leslie,
I have just a little bit on Henry Calvin: b. 25 May 1882 Winchester, Jefferson Co., KS d. 31 Oct 1930 Douglas, ? Co.,WY m. (1) 17 May 1907 probably KS to Nan Welch, b. 8 Oct 1888 at Easton, Leav. Co., KS d. ?
I don't think Nan was married previously since she was only 19 when she and Henry were married. Henry may have been. Henry married again in 1919 in WY to Lillie Holloway, a widow with 4 daughters. After Henry's death Lillie married again. I have no further information on Nan. Henry's father, Ephraim, moved with some of the family to WY and then on to Canada where he died in 1911. Henry and Nan must have gone to Canada in 1910-11 shortly after the birth of Leonard's older brother, George, and the death of their oldest child, Franklin.
One source I have lists your father as Leonard Eugene but Everett is probably correct. Confirming my direct line with data I've collected from many sources is keeping me plenty busy so needless to say I've not attempted to check any other lines. You should always double check any data you're given, though.
My Gr-grandfather, Emmet, was a younger brother to Ephraim so I think that makes us 4th cousins.
Pauline
