Gwartney data

Dear Pauline:
I can't thank you enough for your input. I'm sort of new at this - always thought my dad may have been an only child and now I'm
finding relatives!!! Hooray!!!
Don has a brother also, so now I've found three new relatives. Don is trying to remember what he can from memory because noone ever documented any of this. I started with my dad's soc. sec. #, then got a copy of his death certificate. Just on a hunch I started looking for Gwartneys - it is far easier than looking for a Smith with
a connection.
Do you have any photos of any ancestors that I could have copies of? I've always wanted to know about the other half of my family history and am starved for information!! Don sent me a photo of himself. I just LOVE having a mental image of him in my mind now!!
You can e-mail me direct at leslieinvegas@aol.com or write/mail direct to me at 8216 Crystal Star Ct., Las Vegas, NV
89145. My hp is 702/341-5501.
Talked with my mom on Sunday night and she told me she'd met Leonards mom, Nan, in San Francisco when she was traveling w/her retired (military) husband - not Henry!! So I guess Henry Calvin did have another family
after Nancy.
I have some sheets for charting the "tree" but there are alot of "holes" in this puzzle. I'm ever grateful to you for your help and hope to hear from you again.
Many thanks, Leslie (or Lesley. . .)

Hi Leslie,

You'll find many, many cousins of all degrees.
The Gwartneys have been in the US since the
1750s and many generations had large families.
Then there's the different spellings (or
sometimes miss-spellings) - Gortney, Gwaltney,
Galtney, Gualtney, Gwathmey to name a few,
who are probably related if one can get back
far enough in their research to make the connection.

To add to that, when we Thomas and Gilla descendants
get back to our Grandma Gilla, we can start
on her family, the Brandenburgs (of MD, WV
KY), who are another large family to rival
the Gwartneys. Don't get discouraged!

I only have an original picture of my grandmother,
Frances Dean Gwartney, but I do have some
xeroxed copies of family members' pictures
sent to me by other cousins in the last couple
years ago. Some are good and some not so good.
I'll look through them.

I gather your mother didn't take the opportunity
to gather any information from Nan when they
met in SF? There have been so many times when
I've kicked myself for either not asking questions
or not asking enough questions when I meet
people who might have some data relevent to
my line. Guess I'm doomed to go blind in front
of a microfilm reader in a library somewhere - ha!

Hope you get this message via E-mail or you "spot" it. I have some updated info on my father and his 2nd wife (deceased 1982). Also have another name connected with your uncle but am not sure of the "connection".

I'M SO SORRY I HAVEN'T BEEN IN TOUCH WITH YOU BEFORE NOW BUT i JUST NEVER GOT A NOTICE THAT YOU'D POSTED A MESSAGE.
I LOCATED INFO ABOUT THE SECOND WIFE (SHE DIED IN LAS VEGAS, NV IN 1982) OF MY DAD LEONARD EVERETT "LYNN" GWARTNEY AND HAVE ALSO EXPANDED THE FAMILY HISTORY THAT I'D STARTED TO SOME PRETTY SIGNIFICANT DATA. ALONG THE WAY I'VE CONNECTED WITH OTHER LIVING FAMILY MEMBERS THAT HAVE BEEN A DELIGHT TO MEET AND KNOW. HOPE WE CAN ALSO MAKE THIS CONNECTION. aRE YOU STILL ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THIS FAMILY RESEARCH?

Hi Leslie,

Great to hear you've made a lot of progress. I'm still adding to my database. It says I have more than 3700 individuals in it now - not all Gwartneys, of course! Last May I made a trip back to Leavenworth and photographed Evergreen Cemetery where a lot of the Gwartney pioneers are buried including my gr-gr-grandparents. I'd love to see anything you'd like to share. -Pauline

Hello again! Glad I was able to locate you after all this time as most of the "contact" E-mail addresses are no longer valid. You should be sure to visit http://www.jonesworld.com to search the GWARTNEY surname. Many photos at this site too!!! It's taken me years to locate my dad's 2nd wife but I found he married Irma Whipple in CO (no date). Leonard "Lynn" Everett GWARTNEY (son of Henry Calvin GWARTNEY) was her 5th husband! My 1st cousin, Donald Everett GWARTNEY(I've lost track of him now), said my dad had another daughter but I haven't any "proof" as yet. Irma's history included only one child born to 1st husband that died at birth. No recent info except she died in Las Vegas, NV in 1982. My dad passed away in Dec. 1985 in CO. He was buried in the paupers section of a local cemetery and his burial was paid for by the county. He shared a PO Box address with a "daugher" but the name given was Joe C. Jenkins. I've tried writing to Gwartney's in CO but have found none with knowlledge of my father. Also still trying to tied down the origin of the GWARTNEY name. Possibles narrowed down to Wales, Scotland and Ireland but nothing concrete. Your documented "tree" seems to be far more extensive and expanded than mine but I've met a lot of helpful people along the way who've been gracious enough to "share". I'll gladly do likewise. What is your direct E-mail address now?
