George Lee Gwartney who was married to Mattie Virginia Southern, in OK & TX

Surnames: Gwartney, Southern, Wright
I would like to get some more information on George L. (Lee) Gwartney. He and Mattie Virginia Southern were married and apparently lived in Oklahoma then Henderson County, Texas. They had several children that I found death certificates on or birth Christenings with information. Children include, Etta May, b. Feb. 22, 1900 in Oklahoma, Beula D., b. Jan 11, 1905 in Oklahoma, Edna Vilma, b. Oct 28, 1907 Henderson co. TX, Mary Wilma, b. Aug 8, 1910 in Henderson Co.TX, and Lottie, b. July 22, 1912 in henderson Co. TX.

At some point thereafter, George must have died because Mattie is found married to a J. E. Wright later when her daughter Lottie Gwartney died at age 12 on Dec. 26, 1924 in Ellis county, TX, and the death certificate names J. E. Wright and Mattie Southern as Lottie Gwartney's Father and mother.
Both Lottie Gwartney and her mother Mattie Virginia Wright are buried in Bethel Cemetery in Ellis Co. TX. But no George Gwartney.

Beula D. ended up married to a Jones, died in Dallas in 1965, buried in Italy, TX.
Etta May ended up married to a Turner, died in Dallas in 1966 and is buried in Larel land Cemetery in Dallas.

Edna married a Beasley (possibly a Hubert W.)

Where and when did George L. Gwartney die, where was he born and raised, and who were his parents? And where is he buried? (Henderson Co, TX, Oklahoma?)
Any other information anyone would like to contribute on him is welcome.

Thanks.

Hi,

Not my direct Gwartney line but some info on George Lee:

George Lee Gwartney, born Nov 1872 in Indiana, son of George and Mary Ann Walden Gwartney, grandson of Robert Emmett and Malinda Albin Gwartney. Parents George and Mary Ann and grandmother Malinda are buried at Bryons Chapel Cemetery, Boatman, Mayes Co., OK. George Lee isn't there as far as I can tell.

Lived in Lafayette Twp., Chautauqua Co., KS with his parents in 1880. Probably came with his parents and grandparents in a wagon train from Indiana to Benton Co., AR in late 1870s. Several families came and soon spread out from there to Indian Territory and southern counties in Kansas.

Married Martha Virginia Southern in 1893 probably TX. They lived in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory in 1900 with child Bertha A. born Feb 1895 in TX and child Etta M. born Feb 1900 in Indian Territory.

Living in Mabank, Kaufman Co., TX in 1910 with children Etta M., Elmer L., born 1902 in OK, Beulah D. born 1905 in OK and Edna V. born 1908 in TX. Census says 4 living children of 6 births so Bertha must have passed away and my guess is that there was another child born between 1895 and 1900 who died young.

Mattie Southern Gwartney Wright is living in Red Colony Twp, Sevier Co., AR with husband Joseph E. and step-son Thomas L. and Elmer, Bulah, Edna, Mary born 1910 in TX and Lottie born 1915 in TX all last name Gortner (Gwartney). I would surmise that George Lee died between 1915 and 1920 from this and I might start looking in Kaufman Co.

Mattie and Joseph are living among relatives in Ellis Co., TX in 1930, Thomas L. Wright and family , Elmer L. Gwartney and family and Alvin Wright and family, Joseph's brother I think.

Edna (V.) B., age 22, divorced, and Mary W. age 19, single, live in a rooming house in Dallas in 1930. Edna, possibly using B. for Beasley, had married at age 18 and was a saleslady in a department store. Mary was a chocolate dipper in a candie and cracker co. There is a Hubert Beasley living in New Mexico in 1930 working as a fireman for the railroad.

Hope this helps,
Pauline Drobny
