Hi Jennifer,

I have many Gwartneys in my line down to my
grandmother. If your John E. Gwartney is
related to the Gwartney family of Harrison Co.,
IN, just across the river from Meade & Hardin
Counties, KY, then I have some data for you.

Pauline--
I'm also related to the Harrison County Gwartneys. My mother is in possession of a genealogy book full of Gwartneys, Albins and Mosslers (our branch). This is perhaps the same information you have.
I was wondering if you had any data regarding the family's involvement in the Civil War. To me, it appears that my direct ancestors were either too old or too young to have fought, but perhaps an aunt or uncle...
It's especially intriguing, of course, considering the little stop that Morgan's raiders made in Corydon, and considering the bizarre political climate of Indiana during the war.
Thanks a million,
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

My branch is Thomas Orlando & Gilla Colvin
Brandenburg Gwartney who were in Kansas
Territory by 1855 where my gr-grandfather,
(Robert) Emmet was born in 1859. I have "Micajah
Gwartney of Virginia and His Descendants" by
Frieda Sims Nelson, 1979 which I wish I had in
front of me right now. Do you have the
Sidwell book, "Our Heritage from the Gwartneys
of Indiana" (hope I've got the title correct)?
I believe there is another publication but the
name doesn't come to mind at the moment.

I don't know of any involvement of my Gwartneys
in the Civil War but they MAY have been effected
by Quantrill and his raiders in eastern Kansas.

Would love to compare notes - please e-mail me.

I came across your message while researching in the Library of Congress. I am a descendant of Micajah Gwartney and am wondering how you found the Nelson book to which you referred?
My father was Ernest Leon Gwartney of Dallas, Texas and he told me stories of his grandfather who had his riverboats in New Orleans consfiscated by the Union Army. His wife was also a spy for the Confederates and would smuggle her son (my grandfather) across the lines under her petticoats.
My file of information is not here with me now, but I can be reached at my granddaughter's e-mail address: tanna@sais-jhu.edu

Hi Libby,

I've been on vacation for a couple of weeks
and missed your post.

Rebecca Sidwell's book, "Our Heritage From the
Gwartneys of Indiana" is available through your
local FHC. The book I have is "Micajah Gwartney
of Virginia and His Desendants" by Frieda Sims
Nelson. Mrs. Nelson put the book together for her
niece and nephew. I don't think there is a wide
distribution. She has passed on now and I don't
have any idea where one could obtain a copy.

Are you descended from Anthony Gwartney and
Ollie Haywood?
