Gwartney involvement in Civil War
In my ancestry, a Jonas Ekart was killed in the Civil War buried in Nashville, Tennessee. He was from Harrison County, Indiana ans was the son of Joseph Ekart Jr. and Elizabeth Gwartney. I was hunting info on Elizabeth Gwartney when I found your inquiry. Steve Eckart

Mary Jane Gwartney married Solomon Barrows...we have her father as William Gwartney married to Nancy Crawford. His father was Micajah Gwartney married to Elizabeth ?. I am just now starting to trace this line back and would appreciate any help. The above is NOT written in stone as I have found various discrepancies in what I was given.
Thank you for any help Dawn-rene

Hi Dawn-Rene',
Sorry for the late reply - it's been a while since I've checked this message board.
This isn't my line (William G. is a brother of my 3xgr-grandfather, Ephraim) so I won't add my unverified data on William and confuse the matter further.
You'd probably benefit by spending some time reading LDS films at your local family history library. If you aren't near one maybe someone who shares your line is and would be willing to go look for the both of you.
Micajah Gwartney migrated to Hardin Co., KY and later Harrison Co., IN (across the Ohio River) ca 1790-1800 from Mecklenburg Co., VA. Meade Co., KY was formed from part of Hardin Co., ca. 1822-3 in case you need to look for records in KY after that date.
According to my data William G., son of Micajah Gwartney m. Nancy Crawford, dau. of John Crawford and their daughter, Mary Jane, m. Solomon Barrows all in Harrison Co., IN between the years 1800 to 1850. The films covering those years in Harrison Co. would probably yield the greatest amount of data.
Good luck in your search.

Re: Gwartneys of Harrison Co., IN
My father has told me I have family all over the place out here. We had a family tree done, but it was lost over the years.
I know the Gwartneys in my family are from this general area. My father's name is BILLIE DEAN, my Grandfather's name is Clarence. I am not sure beyond that. My Grandmother's name was Besha Saddler.
Can anyone help me along the way here?
Thanks!

Re: Gwartneys of Harrison Co., IN
Hi Cindy,
I'm happy to look through my database if you can give me a few more details. Do you know Clarence and/or Billie Dean's approximate birthdates? Did they live in Harrison County? If so, when? Do you know where they lived later on in life?

Re: Gwartneys of Harrison Co., IN
I can tell you for sure that my Grandfather (Clarence) was born on 9/28/08 and died in Citrus Heights, CA in 3/1983.
That is all I have at the moment. I am trying to get more information from the family now. I will repost if I find out more.
Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Pauline, do you have any info on Micajah's ancestors. I show his wife as Elizabeth McGruffy (don't know where that came from).
I do show his son William G. married to Nancy Crawford. Shelia

Re: Gwartneys of Harrison Co., IN
We too are descended from the "Gwartneys of Indiana." You got the title right, except there is a stray apostrophe in the official title. I am in the book, Lisa Kay Reed.

I know it has been years, but I am just now finding this connection. I am related to Micajah Gwartney & Elizabeth McGuffey. They had 10 children. I am descended from Anthony & Olive( Haywood), George Marchal & Elizabeth june (Durand), George Anthony & Marie Elizabeth (Mauny),William Marshal & Sallie Amanda (King),& my parents, Willie & Martina (Zerr). William Gwartney (1783) was Anthony's brother. So we are related in that way. There were a couple more Williams down the line. I hope this helps you. Let me know.
