Surnames: Gwaltney, Barlow
Willis P. Gwaltney of Virginia is my 3rd greatgrandfather. His daughter Martha Frances Gwaltney (9/14/1841 Isle of Wight Co, Va - 9/20/1917 Bacon's Castle, Isle of Wight Co)married Pembroke Decateur Barlow. Their son William Henry Lee Barlow was born & died in Isle of Wight Co, His son George Sherman Barlow was my grandfather & his son George Sherman Barlow, Jr was my father. In tracing my ancestry, I have discovered that there seems to be 2 Willis Gwaltney's in neighboring counties who were born about the same time. My ancestor was born 8/4/1803 (as noted in family Bible), married Honour White 9/24/1828 (as noted in Surry Co records & family Bible), & died 12/8/1845 (also noted in family Bible). There is a Willis Gwalttney in the 1840 census of Surry Co whose age & ages of the family members that match the ages in the family Bible. There is also a Willis Gwaltney in the 1830 & 1840 censuses of Isle of Wight Co, as well as a listing in the Isle of Wight Co records of Willis Gwaltney marrying Winnefred Jones 7/17,1835. The ages on these do not match the ages in my ancestor's family Bible. Therefore there seems to be 2 Willis Gwaltneys - one in Surry Co & one in Isle of Wight Co. I believe many are confusing these two in their family trees. Has anyone else noted these two Willis Gwaltneys? If so, which one is the son of William Gwaltney, born about 1769 in Isle of Wight Co, son of Thomas Gwaltney & Elizabeth Clarke?

You are correct that there were two Willis Gwaltney families of about the same age in Isle of Wight & Surry counties. I believe that your ancestor is a son of Richard (abt. 1779-1815) & Martha Gwaltney of Isle of Wight & Surry counties; and grandson of Patrick (abt. 1750-1802) & Martha Gwaltney of Isle of Wight co.

The other Willis Gwaltney (about 1781-1820), who married Elizabeth Edwards in Dec. 1804, was of Surry county, and was the son of William (died before 2/26/1811) & Elizabeth Wombwell (d. before 3/27/1837) Gwaltney. This Willis also had a son Willis (about 1813-56), who married Winifred Moody in 1835, and who lived in Isle of Wight county.

None of the above are descendants of Thomas Gwaltney (about 1732-98) by either of his two wives. He had only daughters by his first wife, Elizabeth Clarke, and two sons, Thomas P. and Ludwell by Sarah, his second wife.

If you would like to contact me directly, I can send you family group sheets for each of these men.

Sincerely,

Anne Gwaltney

I would like your family group sheets for each of the Willis Gwaltneys. I tried to look up Richard & Patrick after I received your note but have found nothing. I tried responding to your e-mail address but have heard nothing.
