I am the only Gutchess in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Did the Gutchess family change its spelling from Goetschius, and if so, who has proof?
Elsie in Syracuse apparently has the most data...

There is a cemetery in Franklin Co, OH which states the name was changed to Gutches or Gutchess since everyone had such a difficult time spelling Goetschius correctly.
My Goetschius family kept the spelling. Some census records are without the S next to the C.
The family allegedly originated when Maurice Goetchi brought 200 Swiss over about 1733 and all are descendants from him.

My husbands family is from MI and I am having a heck of a time finding any information on them. You're the first one I have come across. I have made it as far as Vern Gutchess which would be my husbands grandfather and I think his ggrandfather was Samuel Gutchess. Siblings of Vern would include Ina, Von, Emerson, Gracie, Alice, Vesta and Doris. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Vern was my grandfather...and his Dad was Samuel. I would love to send you some info & pictures and also find out exactly how we are related. We live in Battle Creek.

Sam and Matie had 10 children: Vic, Von, Vern, Ray, & Don. Alice, Grace, Vesta, Velma, & Doris.

I have only "read" that, that is what happened, but I have not seen proof nor do I know anyone who has proof. I will continue to search for more info and let you know if I come up with anything.
