My GUTBERLETS are from Hesse, but this is all I currently have:
Anton GUTBERLET m. Sophia BURKARD (BURGARD, BURKHARDT, etc)
(unknown location and date)

They had at least 3 children:
Augusta GUTBERLET (b?)
Adolph GUTBERLET b 29 Jun 1873 in Batten, Hessen-Nassau, Germany
Anna Justine GUTBERLET b. 28 Sep 1875 in Baden(?) (=Batten I think), Hessen

all 3 children came to NY
Augusta is Buried in Calvary Cemetary Queens, NY
Anna Justine was a Nun 'Sisten Kapistran' buried in Amityville
Adolph (my G-Grandfather) is burried in Westbury, NY

Adolph married Karolina HAMMER of Rottendorf, Franconia, Germany in NYC and had a large family (9 children at least)

does any of this tie into your info?

Bruce

Batten is a little village near Hilders/Rhön.

Were your ancestors Protestant or Roman Catholic?

In the 17th century Protestant Gutberlets lived in Unterweisenborn near Schenklengsfeld.

Wolfgang,

Thanks for the info. I have visited Batten (in 1994), it is a tiny little town. My GUTBERLET ancestors were Catholic in the US, but a family story persists that they were related to French Huguenots, so I don't know if they were always Catholic, or were reconverted to Catholisism from Protestantism at some point. Only further work will confirm/deny this rumor (some versions I've heard say we're descended from a branch some noble French family, but online database searches don't turn up the name GUTBERLET in France as aristocrats.)

No luck on your family. Go to Hunfeld on the internet and you will get the tourist office. Municipaal archivies should be written in advance with your questions. Tell trhem the day you will visit.
