I am researching the descendants of John and Mary Helen (Duke) GORDON. In my database, I have data which I am trying ton confirm and notice that there is some dispute about the GUSEMAN family members and their ancestry. If you can add or correct any of the following information, please let me know.

Elizabeth GORDON (1761-1834), daughter of John GORDON, married Christopher GUSEMAN in July 1777 in Frederick Co MD.
I am wondering who Christopher's father was.

My data shows that they had 2 children:
1) Godfrey GUSEMAN (b: 1779 in MD) - married Margaret Carroll

2) Elizabeth GUSEMAN (b:1781) - married James WELLS in 1799 in Monogalia, W VA. and they lived in Greene Co, PA.
I have found contradictory information about the children of James and Elizabeth (in Leckey and other family trees). I am trying to sort out the fate of their daughter Sarah, born in 1812 in PA.
In some cases, their daughter is listed as Sarah WELLS, married to Isaiah STEELE.
In other cases, their daughter is listed as SARAH ELIZABETH WELLS, married to Jesse WORLEY.
I don't live in PA and haven't found any records to confirm the correct information.

I am also searching for information about Priscilla WELLS, daughter of James and Elizabeth WELLS. I do not know birth or death dates or a spouse.

If you can help with any of these questions, I would appreciate it.

Ruth,
On one of my trips I stopped in Charlotte to look in the archives, there I found a marriage bond for Susannah, daughter of Joseph Guseman(Goosman). She was marrying Thomas Murdock. I also found the will of my Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather Godfrey Guseman(who married Margaret Carroll)
in which he names his sister Susannah Murdock. So Joseph would then also be THIS Godfrey's father. In further research a Christopher who married Elizabeth Gordon seems to have been a son of a Godfrey, but it didn't seem like he could've been my Godfrey due to dates and ages. Somwhere I recall
someone had e-mailed me that Joseph was Joseph Christopher Guseman, and there was more than one of each.
Doe any of thismake any sense, or is it just more confusion?
Would like to hear what you think. Mike

Michael. It might be more confusing -- but then maybe it's not. I think I might see a solution, but I want to go back through all my sources and materials before I respond. I have to be away for a few days, but when I get back, I will tend to this.

I have a long rather complicated family letter which I could send to you about Abraham & Godfrey Guseman. --- but it would probably be best to send it directly rather than clutter up the message board. What email address should I use?

If nothing else, you will see that this was difficult to sort out in 1908 when the letter was written by Colonel John W. Guseman.

You might find this interesting:

There is a bio of Godfrey Guseman Murdock (1837-1899) at www.minerd.com/bio-murdock.

The biography begins:
"Godfrey Guseman Murdock was born 1837 in Preston Co, WV, the son of John S. and Rebecca (Miner) Murdock. He apparently was the namesake of an uncle, and was called 'one of (the) best known citizens' of Wheeling, Ohio County, WV, 'whose name is legion' among friends."

I particularly noted that this Godfrey was named for an uncle, which implies that John Murdock might be the son of Susannah (Guseman) and Thomas Murdock. And that Susannah might have had a brother named Godfrey.

Meanwhile, I will get back to trying to sort through Abraham, Joseph, Christopher and Godfrey.........

Thanks for the reply. I did look at the Minerd site and I did find it interesting. He didn't have anything that would help sort out the ones I'm working on. I do appreciate any help you might be able to give in this matter. Thanks again for your kind consideration.

Michael. I am back puzzling over this Guseman matter, and I might see one potential solution. But I am not sure if it addresses your problem. I gather that you think that Godfrey and Susannah may be the children of Joseph Guseman. I am wondering who Joseph was - could you tell me anything about him - birth date, parents, etc. That might help. It would also help to know birth and or death dates for Susannah if you have them. That might help me figure out if I'm on the right track.

Ruth,
I wish I had more to offer, but what I sent is about it. I have a marriage bond out of an old record book that I got a copy of when I was in Charlotte. It show Susannah, dau. of Joseph Goosman marrying Thomas Murdock. I also have a copy of Godfrey Guseman's will that has Amaziah Guseman(a Gr-Gr
Grandfather of mine) and "my sister, Susannah Murdock" in it.
I was told by someone that Joseph and Christopher were the
same, i.e. that is Christopher Joseph or Joseph Christopher.
I don't know any more than this. Sorry. Mike
