Sorry I just noticed your request for information on Josias R. Guscott. I would also like information on him since he is a brother to my great-great grandmother, Jemima. I do know that he was a farmer at Horselake. He married a Bolt, which I believe could have been a sister to Jemima's husband, my great-great grandfather. They had at least 10 children that I know about. Please contact me if you have found added information. Regards.

Thanks for the reply Lillian.

I have been working my way back through the generations and have discovered that my g grandmother was Sybella Guscotte. On her marriage certificate her father is shown as Josias Rowe Guscotte – Yeoman. I can’t imagine that there are many Josias Rowe Guscottes, with a daughter called Sybella, in east Devon so I’m assuming he’s the one shown at Horselake in the 1851 Census. I have come across his marriage to a Sarah, or Sally, Bolt on the IGI and will be able to confirm this as soon as I have obtained Sybella’s birth certificate.

I have also found a Census of Cheriton Bishop taken in 1821 by the Churchwarden and the Deputy Overseer. It shows Josias aged 7 and Jemima aged 9. This census can be found at http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/DEV/CheritonBishop/CheritonBi....

I’m afraid that’s all I know so far but at least it proves we are probably related – very distantly!

I did know that Josias is a younger brother to Jemima. Their other brothers and sisters are Thomas, Jane, Mary, Rebecca, Jane, Lydia, Rebecca (the first one died less than a year), Jemima, and Josias. Perhaps you have more siblings.
Their parents were John Guscott and Ann Southcott.
I know Josias and Sally had Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Sybella, Thomas, Emily, Jane, Harriott and Editha. I understand that the 1846 records are still in the parish.Hope to visit Europe again soon. Perhaps I will have more time for family research.
It's exciting to find a short-tail relation!

Thanks Lillian

You have a couple more siblings than I had. And I did not know Ann's maiden name. One more link in the chain.

Thanks again

Hope you're still on-line, Barbara. I wanted to let you know that my mother found a box she has had for almost 50 years from her family farm. In it was a family outline written by my grandmother on the Bolt family. It has a note at the bottom that states: "Jemima Guscott was Norman English. She traced her ancestry back to a Knight who commanded the right wing of the army of William, the Conqueror." Thought you might be interested in this find. Best wishes!

Hi Lillian

I have at last sent for a copy of Sybella Guscott's birth certificate. It confirms that her mother was Sally BOLT. That means we must share two sets of great great grandparents!

I'd love to hear any more you know of the Bolts.

Best Wishes

Barbara

If you are able to provide more information about your mother's find and her distant Guscott ancestor, I'd really appreciate it. Is there anything more to this family story about jemina?

Thanks

Craig

Craig,

Jemima Guscott Bolt is my mother's great-grandmother. She was born on 1 Apr 1811 to John and Ann (Southcott) Guscott. John and Ann were married 7 Jul 1783 at Dunchideock.

Jemima married George W. Bolt 29 Sept 1834 in Exeter, Saint George, England.

Jemima and George are buried in Lisbon Cemetery, Michigan, USA.

Would certainly appreciate any information you may have, also. I would be glad to answer any other questions, too.

Regards

I have an ancestor John Guscott born 1784 in Dunchideock, Devon, son of John and Anne. He also had a sister Anne born 1787 and married William Lake in 1807, and a brother William, born 1792 who married Catharine and had a son George born 1821.
Would these be older siblings?
