My grandfather was John (Jan) Gurall. According to the Ellis Island Site, 2 Jan Gurals or Guralls came to America. One is listed as going to PA. The other is listed as going to Amsterdam, NY. Either, according to age, could be my grandfather. Do you have any knowledge of either Jan Gurall

To Pablo Gural: I researched Gural name last year and finally tracked it down to Ukraine/Eastern Slovakia area. Was told that it means 'hill people', in reference to the Carpathian mountains where they came from. Generally speaking, these were in the most impoverished areas along the east Carpathian mountain ridge - the predominantly Greek-Catholic Ruthenian/Rusyn population. My grandfather was Greek Orthodox and came from Ung County. I know he left that part of Europe late 1800's as a small child with his family; they emmigrated to Pennsylvannia where his father & later he worked in steel mills. I actually found quite a bit of info on the internet by searching Ung Co., carpathian mountains, etc. Contact me if you need more info.
