AbnerGupton's actual name was William Abner Gupton. I was taught for a long time That I was a dirrect decendant of his by my grandfather and found out later that I was not. My liniage goes to either a brother or a cousin from the best I could find. I live in Henrietta, TN and my home is about 1/4th of a mile frome his grave site. The cemetary of near 50 graves has only one legibly marked grave and that is his. There are two other Gupton cemetery's in the area and they both have my ancestors in them.
Archives on William Abner Gupton and other Gupton's that settled this area can be found in Clarksville, Montgomery Co. TN. Cheatham Co. Historical and Genioglical scocity has some information on him as well. A lot of archives were lost when the court house burned. I think at two different times.
Backing up, I am of the understanding that William Abner Gupton as well as several other Guptons were in fact Revolutionary war vetrans. I can't find where they came from before settling in America. I also understand that William Abner Gupton was the first established Gupton to migrate to TN after the American Revolution. He settled a large parcle of land in what is now Cheatham and Montgomery Counties. So much in fact, I have been told he had to sign for the state induction process to be complete. Time of settlement was 1806 from N.Carolina.

Hx of Guptons re/ Revolutionary war status. My father was Edwin Darling Gupton Jr. born in Chattanooga, TN. to Edwin Darling Gupton Sr. who was from Kentucky and married Lucille Hale. Edwin Sr. was a soldier, though not of the Revolutionary era. I have an old photo of him in his uniform. He was in the Cavalry and was stationed near Mt. Carmel, CA, then in Southern AZ as border patrol (yes even back then) then to TX. He suffered a stroke while in TX and was sent to Washinton DC. and is buried, I believe in VA.
It is my understanding that the Guptons were from England and related both to Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone. Hope that info, tho recent, is of some help. I live in AZ. and am the dgtr of Jr. My father spent his productive years as a physicist at Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tn. CWO

I am helping a friend research her slave ancestor, named Green GUPTON born in Tennessee about 1820. She would like to know the name of his slave owner.

I have tried to find a list of the 100 or more slaves reportedly owned by an Abner GUPTON of Montgomery County, TN. to see if Green GUPTON, might be listed among them. Any assistance in locating such a list or the name of the enslaved man, named Green GUPTON would be greatly appreciated.

I have never took the time myself to find my true Gupton line. I had heard that the slaves he owned were also burried in that cemetary he is burried in. You might could check with some historians in the area and see if they know of slave documents.
My great-great grandfather E.N. Gupton jr. who lived from 1848 until 1924 owned a large tract of land that he farmed mostly with tenants and share croppers. He was also a working business man who owned and operated the local store.
Which in small communities like Henrietta was big business. My grandfather said he had several black families that lived and worked on his farm. In the turn of the century it was bad business in some areas to have them around, but they did a lot of honest work regardless. Hope this helps.

I almost forgot; the only names I know of for black families in this area are from the turn of the century. They are: Pearson, Person, Sweat, Dicks, Head, Mallory, Bell, Majors, and one other I can't remember. They all have ancestors in this area with the acception of Pearson or Person. I don't know any of them. My great-great grandfather's work hand was "Uncle Pete Person"; his family lived here on the place. The "night riders" burned up several hay stacks and a barn because grandady Ebb was working him. They moved to Dickson,Tn for a few years while things calmed down. Pete took his family and I don't know if they returned. Their sweet little log house finally fell about 15 years ago. My grandfather had used it as a corn crib and storage.
