Yes, the name has been spelled in many ways. It started as Gabtail, Gubtail, etc. by the time the group that I decend from, Thonas, Issac, etc had settled in Waterbury Center they were using Guptil for the most part. The William you seem to be descended from seems to have stayed in Maine. Mine went to VT early, so I didn't follow the family in Maine after about 1820 when the last of my Thomas' property was sold by his son. Wish I could help you more. My email is Gabtail@aol if you need to reach me.

Hi Lorraine, I just discovered this board today by accident. I have now placed a link to it on my Guptill Genealogy web site, which is really a pointer site.

Yes, lots of us are interested in your research. Is it on a web site somewhere, or perhaps in a genealogical file that you can share?

My address is ash@melbpc.org.au.

Hi Ian, No my Guptils in Maine seem to all stay in the area of Brewick, Kittery and Waterborough until they moved to Northern VT starting in about 1780 thru 1795. They seemed to all go to Waterbury, Washington Co. VT. As was the custom of the day, several families who had intermarried moved together, i.e. Jones, Goodwin etc. Sorry I am not more help on the Maine families.

I am looking for info on the Gubtails of Vermont. I am a descendant of Ira Gubtail. He had two brothers Luther and Daniel. Their father is Humphrey. I have had no luck in finding info on him or making the connection other than I know that they are descendants of the Maine Guptills.

I would love to receive any info you are willing to share and I would be happy to provide any you don't have.

Sorry, my Guptils all went to VT early. But there was a Winthrop Guptil, who went to VT, that might be either a father or grandfather. His Will was probated in VT and all his children were named. He (first Winthrop) went to Waterbury VT from Berwick / York Co. Maine in early 1800's. First Winthrop's father was Thomas who gave his 2 sons, Nathaniel and Winthrop, land in York County, per York County Deed Records.
