I hope you are still watching this board! My great grandmother was a Betsey Guptill, who came with her husband William Abbott from Maine to Wisconsin in abt 1850. I have documentation that Betsey's parents were Beniah (1782-1860) and Lydia Sands Guptill (1799-?). From then on backwards I have no documentation, but using other trees to give me a clue, it may go back this way: Thomas (1721-1800), Nathaniel (1685-1762), and Thomas (1650-1695)who came from England. The families lived in Porstmouth NH and a variety of places in Maine and Vermont. If this has any fit to the family documentation that you have, I would be eternally grateful.

Hi cguptell,

Do you have any more information about that? I have tracked a few of the early Guptill/Gubtail families and have not heard of that name or a close approximation of it before. Although people have said that the Gubtails came from Scotland, England, Wales or France, Wales seems the most credible. I was in touch with a Guptill living in the UK (an American who went here), who said she had heard of an old gravestone nearby but I could not reach her after that.

The original Gubtail that most agree on is Thomas Gubtail, who came to the US. His son Nathaniel was born in 1685 in Portsmouth, NH, which may suggest that Thomas landed there, but not conclusively.

The "hop" across to GMI from the US didn't take place until a later generation (William II in 1800), hence I am curious to hear about someone emigrating directly to GMI from Wales. It is entirely possible that a Gubtail relative in Wales emigrated much later, so am not casting any doubts. That would be an exciting new piece to add to the puzzle.

Anyone know the Albert Guptill from Nashua NH? He passed away last week and we are trying to locate family. We thought he had relatives in Sharon MA but have been unable to locate anyone. I know this is an old thread but hoping for a long shot.
