Gundel in the UK

Hi,

In the UK 3 brothers came over from Germany in the 1930’s. 1 went to the coastal town of Grimsby and was involved with the fishing industry and the 2 other brothers settled in Nottinghamshire and went in to the coal mining industry. 1 of these miners was my Great Grandfather. I have lost touch with the Gundel side of the family. I have been told that there is a town in Germany called Gundel’s town and that there are around 2000 people world wide with the surname Gundel. Any long lost or distant relations out there ???

Hi, i think that i could possibly be researching the same family.
we are looking for 3 brothers from germany sirname Gundel. the brothers we know of came to the uk before1930s though. the three brothers we know of are called John Michael, Charles and Fred ( German names Johann, Carl and Friedrich), i know that all three lived in Mansfield Nottinghamshire in 1939 as we have internement papers from the local police force. I can trace back from my generation right to John and Charles however, cannot find trace of Fred, could possibly have lived in Nottingham though. Before moving into Mansfield the at least 2 of the Brothers lived in Sutton cum Duckmanton nr Calow Derbyshire.

Let me know if this is any help or if you can help me

Thanks

Hi,

I also live in Derbyshire. From what I know 3 brothers came over to Englend from Gundel's Town in Germany. 2 settled in Derbyshire and 1 in Grimsby. This was the early 1900's.

The 2 brothers in Derbyshire went into coal mining whilst the brother in Grimsby went in to the fishing industry.

Does any of this sound familar ?

Regards
<ark

Surnames: Gundel
Hi,

I have very little information on Fred Gundel. I have infront of me at the moment a "male enemy alien-exemption from internment- non refuge" form. I have one of these for each of the 3 brothers I am concerned with.

The form I have for Fred tells me that, he was born 30th January 1976 (making him the youngest of the three brothers) in Kunzelsau, Wurteburg.

He was living at 48 Broxtowe Drive Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. This being the same street as his 2 brothers.

He worked as a stoker for Messiers M.C. Foister, Clay and Ward, Ltd. Hoisery Manufacturers, in Mansfield.

He was exempted from internement on 11th October 1939 and wasn't repatriated. the reasons for this decision are as follows " Has resided in this country for 46years and is loyal. opposed to the Nazi regime"

Does any of this sound familiar to you? If not I hope it has been able to help rather than hinder.

Callum

Hi again,

Sorry Christine the D.O.B for fred was meant to read 1876.

I have also foundfurther information since I posted my reply earlier today.

Fred Married in 1899 to either a Emma Lewis or a Elizabeth Newton. I think more than likely this is Elizabeth Newton.

I have 2 childrens names to their marriage the 1st born being a daughter named Evelyn in 1900 and the 2nd a son to the name of Frederick born 1902 and died 1985.

Hope this helps
