Hi Callum,

Whilst I do not know the name "Fred" all the rest does make sense. Mansfield is in Nottinghamshire and about 15 miles from where I live now. The town had 2 main industries, hoisery and mining, sadly both are now almost gone.

Do you have any details of Fred's children or any children of the brothers ? My father is Alan Gundel who was born, and still lives, in Mansfield. He would have been born around 1943 ish. Sorry to sound vague, but, my parents spilt around 1969 and we did not keep in contact.

does any of this tie in with the details you have ?

Hi Mark

Fred was the youngest of the three brothers born 1876 and worked for the Hoisery Company in 1939.

From what I known Fred had a daughter called Evelyn born 1900 and a son called Frederick born 1902.

I Live in Mansfield and the street where the three brothers lived one of these houses is still owned by a Gundel.

Of the other brothers Charles (Carl) had Lillian 1904, Charles 1905, May 1904 Edward 1907, Gertrude, Violet, Eric 1920 ( I have more information on him as mum went to school with his daughter). Ernest 1921 and Beatrice.

My Particular lineage is from John (Johan), He had a son John James (amongst Others), Who's Son was Ronald, who in turn had a son Ernest (My Grandfather).

It has been hard for me to trace as my grandparents split up shortly afte my mothers birth, and have never been in contact.

Hi,

I just found this from an old e-mail my dad, Alan Gundel, sent me 2 years ago, does any of this tie in with your information ......

"I don't know how much you know about the Gundel family so here is some information. All people you meet with the name Gundel will in some way be related to you as all the family in the UK come from the refugees that came from the Black Forest area of Germany in the early 1900s looking for a better life in England,

Your Great Great Grandfather was a postman in Germany and your Great Grandfather came to England with his three bothers and one sister. Your Great Grandfather Charles, two of his brothers and his sister settled in Mansfield and one brother went to Hull, they were the rich side of the family as at one time they owned a fleet of trawlers. The remaining brothers all went work in the local pits namely Sherwood Colliery and the sister owned a local shop which she continued to run with the help of her two daughters. Your Great Grandfather met his wife in Mansfield who at the time was working as a maid until they married, she was also German. If all the children had survived there would have been seventeen but eleven did so you can see how the family has grown.

Your Granddad Charles was miner all his life working at Sherwood Colliery and your Grandma Georgegina who worked for Mansfield Shoe Company was also born in Mansfield but her family history is vague as her father came from Ireland and on arrival in England promptly changed his name both your Grandparents died more than twenty years ago. That leaves me and my sister Jean, she had five children, so you have plenty of cousins.

As you can see your a bit of a mixture being one quarter German with a dash of Irish."

Mark,

all of that ties in fantastically with what I know of Charles's family. The lady your great granfather married was a Louise Lackner in 1902 They married in Derbyshire. At the time of the 1901 Census your Great Grandfather Charles and my Great Great Great Grandfather John (2 of the three brothers), were living in Far Duckmanton Derbyshire. the 3rd Brother Fred lived in Brimmington Derbys.

In 1939 Charles was living at 88 Broxtowe Drive in Mansfield and John was living at 7 Broxtowe Drive Mansfield also Fred lived at 48 Broxtowe Drive Mansfield.

Do you know the name of the sister who came with her brothers by any chance? Would it possibly be a Luise? In a letter that was sent to my Grandma (gundel by marriage) the lady who wrote it says her grandmother was a gundel names Luise, and shad had brothers and sisters namerd: Johann, Carl and Fredrich (A.,K.A John, Charles and Fred).

From what I have written down you appear to be cousins with a girl my mum went to school with Annita Gundell her father joined the British Army in the 2nd World War and they Anglicised his name. His name was Eric (your Grandfathers Brother),
