Several months ago I happened upon Ancestry.com and someone had a question about a John Swartwout from Sackets Harbor NY. I indicated that I would have to query my grandmother who resides in a nursing home to see if and what she could recall. First off the Swartwout Chronicles are an invaluable part of my side of the family and according to my grandmother there are only 12 copies in existence (1 in the Watertown NY library and 1 in the Jarvis/Jervis Library in Rome NY).
My grandmother says that the first Swartwouts came from Amsterdam and settle d primarily in the Poughkeepsie, NY area. Some of our ancestors came from Vlieland in their own ship and somehow or the other she had been able to trace back to the 1100s. There are old papers in her files that I will have to locate. But back to the issue of John Swartwout... We believe that John is descended from Abraham Swartwout who was a famous soldier in the War of 1812. The story goes that he gave up his coat of blue to make up the blue background of the first flag that was flown over Fort Stanwix in what is now Rome NY. If you go to the museum there you will see the flag and the letter that he wrote. Now Abraham is descended from Jacobus Swartwout who was a General in the Revolutionary War and he was born in Poughkeepsie. He had a brother (My grandmother can't remember his name but says he was a lawyer and a judge (possibly William Swartwout) and had a lot of daughters, one of whom married into the Allens of Massachusetts). My grandmother, nee Miriam Elizabeth Swartwout (married Paul Hancock Allgaier), daughter of Harry Swartwout, who was the son of Ira G. Swartwout says that John Swartwout was related to my great grandfather Harry. John fought in WWI and was associated with Sackets Harbor and the Delta Dam in Rome NY. My grandmother also mentioned the Kettle family tie. I don't know if this has made things more convoluted or if they have helped. If someone has a copy of the Swartwout Chronicles I'd love to see them since I don't get home that often. It is amazing how many Swartwouts there are.

Swartwout Chronicles is mostly Peenpack Swartwouts (Antoni, Thomas & Bernardus sons of Roeloff) - the ones who remained in Lower Orange County. Arthur Weise was hired by a Wm Swartwout to research and write the book i believe the sum was abt $10K - there were several hundred copies more than 12- 1 of which is @ the Minisink Valley Historical Society in Port Jervis NY - i know of several in private hands and occasionally up for sale on Ebay. the Kettlehuyn Chronicles is a companion to Swartwout Chronicles - there is an edition where the books are joined under the same binding and another edition where the books are in a set.

would you like to be put in contact with the Swartwout Historians? Are you descended from Antoni, Thomas & Bernardus? pls email me jgumaertesta@hotmail.com i am the Gumaer family historian & specialize in the Peenpack Families and History. there are tens of thousands of Swartwouts with all its variations.
