I am looking for any information on James K. Polk Gum, he is my gggrandfather, born and lived in Highland Co. Va. The only thing my grandfather and my gUncle Alvie Richard Gum remembers is that he was called "Polk" and he shot himshelf. Have found a tomestone in the Puffenbarger cemetary with the name James P. Gum b. 1845, d.1885.

My ggrandfather is Charles Richard Gum, grandfather is William Rober Gum, father Richard Lee Gum.

Thanks,

Kimberly (Gum) Cook

Hi:

Do you have the names of any of James Polk Gum's brothers or sisters. I have found about 3 or 4 James Gum in the 1850 census of Highland County. On the 1870 census in Highland County, there is a James P. Gum and Louisa Gum. Is this the right couple. Where is Puffenbarger cemetery at?
Please e-mail me at: bgumm@wk.net. I may be able to find some more information for you. Thanks. Bessie Gumm

Hi,

The 1870 Census is right, my ggrandfather (Charles Richard Gum), gaunt's and uncle's are listed below. I have read that some of the census have the wrong m or f becasue they couldn't read them.

James K. Polk Gum was b. 1845 d. 1885 accordging to the tombstone in Puffenbarger Cemetary in Highland Co.. I am trying to fine out if the tombstone is his or not.

All I know about him is that he shot himself, and there was snow on the ground that day. I have no documentation of his birth or death as of yet.

My great aunt told me that he went by the name "Polk" and he was married to a lady named Louisa that was all she could remember.

We have a picture of a person who is my gggrandfather, who I think is James Polk Gum in the family, I am just trying to get all the facts straight.

Thanks

Kimberly Cook

Hello,
I believe that you have the same Gum line that I do! My gg grandmother is Mary Gum, and I'm almost certain that she is James Polk's daughter Mary. My Mary was born about 1871 & married Austin Fleisher. I would be very interested to know what you have discovered and will be glad to share what I find out (although I don't have much at the moment!)
If anyone following this thread has any info please email me at Stacy@presentationsontheweb.com Thanks!

Thanks for the information! I am also very interested to find out more about James Polk's daughter Mary. She supposedly had my great grandmother out of wedlock and then married Austin Fleisher. I would love to know who my ggrandmother's birth father is, but realize that this will be almost impossible. We are supposed to have some Native American lineage in our family. This is what my grandparents always told me, and they said it came from my ggrandmother's family. Do you know of any Native American heritage in the Gum line? Thanks for your help!

Hi Sherry,
Thanks for replying...
It's nice to know that someone else has at least heard the same rumors! Gives me hope! If I find out anything, I'll let you know. I am going to try to attach a picture of my ggrandmother, Eva who is Mary Gum's daughter. I have never seen any photos of the Gums that I know of. I have a ton of old photos that are unidentified, though....I'm curious to know if Eva looks like the Gums...can you tell? Hope the photo comes through Thanks! Stacy
