I'm sorry to report that my grandmother, Muriel M Hoffman, passed away on November 25, 2007 at the age of 93. She enjoyed her genealogical work to the very end. If anyone here knew her and would like her obituary or memorial information, I would be happy to provide it. If anyone wishes to obtain a copy of "Leaves from the Gum Tree", please e-mail me. Our family will continue to make them available to carry on my grandmother's commitment to the vast amount of research she did into the Gum lineage. I can be contacted at chkaser@comcast.net.
Sincerely, Catherine Hoffman Kaser

Hello Catherine;

I am your 2nd cousin, a Great-Grandson of Walter O and Bertha E Davis Hoffman through Francis Glenn Hoffman. Another shared, but more distant, relative asked about obtaining a copy of TLFTGT. She is linked to us through the Davis/Gum/Carter families and I have pointed her to this thread for your contact information.

I also wanted to share a little of my fond experiences with your Grandmother Muriel.

As a boy growing up in central Illinois, we would always attend the two August family reunions, Davis in Miller Park, Bloomington, McLean County and Samuels in Weldon Springs State Park near Clinton, De Witt County.

Your Grandmother Muriel would always report to the gathered family members at those reunions, her genealogical finds, uncovered during her travels to courthouses and libraries of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic coastal states.

Being a schoolteacher, as I seem to recall, this endeavor (perhaps more appropriately passion?) consumed her summer time away from school.

I suspect I was one of the more attentive in the audience, noticed and appreciated by Aunt Muriel, as she often would extend an invitation for me to sit with her and review her notes, photocopies, and newspaper clippings, following her presentation to the group.

Aunt Muriel gave me three gifts.

The first is a 1923 "Peace" silver dollar, given to me at the Samuels reunion in the early 1960's as best I now can recall.

The second was a copy of "TLFTGT", unsolicited and very generous, as I merely reported to her my marriage to add to her family notes.

The third gift was a very profound interest in genealogical research. I deeply appreciate and cherish all three, but perhaps the third most of all, as I add to her base for the next generation or two.

Mark, I read your note with great interest and am so grateful for it. One of my earliest memories is of accompanying my grandparents to one of those summer reunions -- must have been Davis. Passion is absolutely the right word to describe my grandmother's relationship to her genealogical work, and we are so blessed by the trove of stories and information she so carefully compiled. We are all lucky to have you carrying the baton she passed along to you.

I'll be sharing your note with my father and aunt, as well as my brothers and sisters. I'm sure my dad will have some wonderful memories of his own to add to yours. A nice bit of shared legacy with your story is that at Christmas, he shared a few special coins with my older son. And so it continues...

Warmly,
Catherine

Just wanted to add a note of how helpful your grandmother's research was to me. I bought a copy of her book years ago as my line of descent is through Roger/John/Jacob/Comfort Gum. It was a great help then and remains a cherished family book. It is also the gift that keeps on giving. Just a year or two ago it helped me unlock my direct descent from English royalty through Comfort Gum's mother, Sarah Claypool. If you or anyone else is interested in this connection, please let me know.
