To whomever who can help me...... Could anyone please tell me where the name of "Gum" originated from...such as country/ies? Thank-you Robin R. Godfrey

I found that some Gum's come from England and some from Germany

My last name was Gum before my grandfather had it changed to Gumm. I have found the surname Gum on manifests of merchant ships pulling into the NewYork harbor dated back in 1870's. New York has online searches for the manifests.

Original Spelling of Gums (German)
I am told from my father the Gums name was origianlly Gummz. It changed as the boat brought the grandfather over to USA.
I am looking for anyone who knows or are related to any Gums in the Wisonsin/Illinois area.
I am currently looking to find out where we originate...when we came on the boat to USA. I was thinking it was Texas first and then migrated to Wisconsin.
Reply please,
Thanks
Daniel

Re: Original Spelling of Gums (German)
I'm married to a Daniel Gums. His family is from Wisconsin as far as we can tell. We can't seem to get beyond his grandfather's name, which was Leonard O. Gums. There aren't too many of us out there...maybe there is a connection. Carol
