Re: Gum Family of Weston West Va.
Don't know anything about those Gums but my mother was born in Weston in 1921. Mary Maxine Moore her mother was Margaret Grace Gum dau. of Albert Franklinn Gum and Mary Louella Gum. Albert was the son of Mathew and Susan Gum both of Highland County, Virginia. Mathew was the son of McBride, McBride was the son of Isaac, son of John II, son of John I, son of Roger. Can't recall Louella's line from memory.Louella was the dau of Henry Gum and Margaret Winans. Think Henry was the son of Joseph m. Margaret Chew. (The Chew Gum Wedding!!!) Have to look those lines up but I am certain of the Margaret Grace Gum line above. Lots of Gums were in W.VA in and around Lewis County and I suspect some of them bailed out of Highland and Pendleton about the time of the Civil War. There is a reunion every August at the fisher Baptist Camp just outside Weston. Not many of the Virginia side comes for it. They are still mad about the war and the traitors in the family that left the confederacy.

Re: Gum Family of Weston West Va.
Hello Mr. Bagot: That was just too beautiful a message to not post a reply! In my John (Jesse, Jacob, Roger etc) Gum line, the KY & IL Gum's split because of the war, some moving further south, some moving plumb WEST, & legend has it those who fell in with the Confederacy ADDED an 'M' to the name to dissociate themselves from us Yankees. And by Golly. Those feelings hold hard & fast, don't they?? It was good to hear from you, cousin! Rita
