Robert Merila,
Strange to see that Merila name in context with Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY.
Any relation to that guy who built the baseball stadium replica with toothpicks perhaps 30 years ago? He lived in Brooklyn also.
I was born in Brooklyn in 1944 and we lived there until 1952. We lived in Bay Ridge, perhaps 810 41st street.
My father was Leo Merila born in Jacksonville, FL to Hugo Merila who emmigrated to USA from Finland in the early 1900's. Hugo lived on 42nd street, Bay Ridge, until his death around 1951.
I know very little about this side of my family. My grandfather's sister was perhaps Aino Merila? and a brother was Keijo Merila (who, I heard from an older 2nd cousin, had a severe problem with alcoholism).
I have photos with no names or dates that show people that look related to my grandfather doing handstands on motorcycles, street curbs, shipwrecks, etc. I'm guessing 1930 time frame. Perhaps some of them were in the circus, who knows?

I think that they shortened the name from Merilainen as on a WW1 draft card record there is a Hugo Merilainen in NY. born in Oulu Finland in about 1886. Alicia

Here is his emigrant record, he was from Haukipudas Oulu province Finland.

Alicia, You do know what you are doing! I now know more about my grandfather. I'm sure that you found his record. I found my grandmother on ship's logs for Ellis Island, but not this grandfather. You are correct about the name being shortened. Thanks, tom merila

Update: Hugo Merila's sister was Marie, brother was Kalle who married Aino Laine and perhaps also had a Canadian brother who was rumored to be in the circus. Hugo's brother Kalle, had two children: Clara & Keijo. Hugo's naturalization papers state that he (who was Finnish) came from an area controlled by Russia.
