Hi Dean,
Here is a website for a Slovak translator.
www.stars21.com/translator/slovak_to_english.html.
You should draft a generic letter with all known information and mail it to all GULAs in the Slovak white pages. Slovakia is not that big, so I doubt you will find thousands in the phone book.
The Slovak White pages are found at:
http://telefonny.zoznam.sk/co=st_zoznam_enVyhl adaj = search for
Mesto = City
Ulica = Street
Meander around until you figure it out.
Then, go to this website for zip codes:
www.cisarik.com or
www.slposta.sk/index.php?id=106You can also find the names of nearby cities at
www.cisarik.com. This website has a wealth of information and you might be able to see which villages/cities your family surname was present in during certain times.
Also, ask Juraj to place a posting of your searching information on
www.cisarik.
You can also ask Helene to put a posting on her website at:
www.SlovakPride.homestead.comwww.helenezx.homestead.comwww.our-Slovakia.com.
For the small fee of Helene's newsletters, she will give you contact information to you of others researching the surname you are searching.
I did a similar mailing looking for FENO [FENYO] in December, and family in Slovakia contacted me. They are gathering family tree information and I should receive it soon. They have confirmed we are family, and also told me things about my great-grandmother and great-great grandparents I did not know before. We're having a wonderful time with this.
Let me know if you come across a John GULA who married Maria LENKO. John and his first wife Helen immigrated to America. Helen died, and he then married Maria (Mary) LENKO, who is also a Slovak immigrant.
Good luck,
Yvonne
