I have quite a bit of information concerning Samuel Giberson (or Guiberson) and his descendants in my Giberson family database. He is my reference number 578.
The following information highlights the first two generations:
FIRST GENERATION
1. Samuel Allen GIBERSON was born on April 11, 1781 in New Jersey. Birthdate calculated from his age at death as shown on tombstone (69 years, 4 months, 19 days). He resided in 1810 in Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1810 or 1811 by which time he had changed the spelling of his name to Guiberson, apparently unique to his branch of the family. He appeared on the census in 1810 in Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He appeared on the census in 1820 in Newcastle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio. Samuel Guiberson is listed as head of a household, consisting of
3 white males to age 10;
1 while male to age 26 to 45;
3 white females to age 10;
1 white female 18 to 26; He resided in 1824 in Monroe Township, Holmes County, Ohio. He resided before 1830 in Killbuck Township, Holmes County, Ohio. He was buried in 1830 in Christy Chapel Cemetery, Monroe Township, Holmes County, Ohio. He died on August 30, 1830 in Killbuck Township, Holmes County, Ohio. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Killbuck Township, Holmes County, Ohio. Samuel Guiberson, 70, born in New Jersey, is listed as head of a household consisting of:
Elizabeth, 57, born in New Jersey.
Samuel's occupation is listed as farmer. His real estate is valued at $2,000. He was also known as Samuel Allen Guiberson. James Guiberson Walker:
1. I think it is safe to say that Samuel Allen Guiberson is not the son of Benjamin Giberson and Hannah Henderson of Dover, Monmouth Co., NJ. The Samuel Gibeson shown in the 1830 OH census for Laurel Twp., Hocking Co., is that person. There is no hard proof of that, but that seemed almost certain to Lorraine Lindeman, a direct descendant of the latter Samuel, and myself. She is desceased, but she gave me a group sheet showing him as one of the children of Benjamin, Jr. I will send you that sheet later. I am still looking for the names of Samuel Allen's parents.
2. The 1810 PA census shows a Samuel Gybeson in Strabane Twp., Washington Co. PA as being 45 with a wife 26, 1 son 10 and a dtr. 10. This is a perfect fit for the Samuel Allen Guiberson familty. According to my group sheet, in 1910 they would have been Sam 29, wife Elizabeth 23, Edwin 3 and Charlotte 1. In addition, the Strabane Twp. assessment rolls, show a Samuel Guiberson (correct spelling) with a small assesment but no house in 1810 and 1811. He is not on their rolls before or after those dates.
3. My great great grandfather, John Warner Guiberson was born in PA according to his headstone which identifies him as "a native of PA." This suggest the family left PA shortly after John was born in 1812.
4. The earliest record or Samuel Allen in OH is the 1820 census which listed him as a resident of Newcastle Twp, Coshocton Co. That part of Coshocton Co., was incorported into Monroe Twp., Holmes Co. OH in 1824. The family is designated a Pioneer of Coshocton as well as an original settler of Holmes Co. in the early histories of that area. Samuel owned land in both Monroe and Killbuck Townships.
5. The 1820 OH census also shows a Harmon Guiberson (same spelling) living in nearby Newcastle Twp., Coshocton Co. Harmon is listed as 44 which would indicate he would be too young to be Samuel's father, but could be a close relative, probably a cousin. Harmon had apparently left OH before the 1830 census as he does not appear there.
6. The 1830 OH census shows Samuel now living in Killbuck Twp. where he apparently remained until his death later that same year.
He was married to Elizabeth WARNER (daughter of John WARNER) on June 21, 1807 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Elizabeth WARNER was born about 1787 in Upper Freehold Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. She appeared on the census in 1830 in New Castle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio. Elizabeth Giberson is listed as the head of a household, consisting of:
1 male age 5 to 10;
1 male age 10 to 15;
1 male age 15 to 20;
1 female age 10 to 15;
1 female age 15 to 20;
1 female age 40 to 50;
She appeared on the census in 1850 in Killbuck Township, Holmes County, Ohio. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Madison Township, Madison County, Iowa. Elizabeth, 73, born in New Jersey, is listed in the home of her son-in-law George Fry (#13565) and daughter, Charlotte Guiberson (#13554). She died in December 1867 in Winterset, Madison County, Iowa. Samuel Allen GIBERSON and Elizabeth WARNER had the following children:
+2 i. Edwin Robert GUIBERSON (born on October 4, 1807).
+3 ii. Charlotte GUIBERSON (born on October 4, 1809).
4 iii. Elizabeth GUIBERSON was born about 1810 in Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Died young
+5 iv. John Warner GUIBERSON (born on April 19, 1812).
+6 v. Ann GUIBERSON (born about 1814).
+7 vi. Samuel Brittain GUIBERSON "Brett" (born in 1816).
+8 vii. Nathaniel Warner GUIBERSON (born on January 20, 1823).
