John B. Franklin Guffin's sister Mary Roscoe Guffin married my George R. Hall. I found this information in my search and thought it may be of help to someone. If anyone has any information on my George R. Hall and Mary R. Guffin I would love to hear form you. I do have some information on this family if anyone is interested.

From the Effects of a Sunstroke
Died, from the effects of Sunstroke, received while in the army, John B. Franklin Guffin, at the home of Capt. Geo. R. Hall, of Sharon Township, Johnson County Iowa. He was born January 2nd. 1835, in the state of New York. Moved to this county in 1855, died Sept, 16, 1892. When the war broke out Mr. Guffin felt called to go out in defense of his country, accordingly enlisted in Co. 1 of the 22nd. regiment of Iowa infantry volunteers. Here he served nearly three years, and while his regiment was lying near New Orleans he received sunstroke which finally ended his life. Some thirty-five years ago he professed faith in Christ as his living Savior and we trust he is now at home with Him. His wife, five sons and four dauthters, with many frienda and acquaintances, are left to mourn his departure. Funeral from Heb. 13:14.

Hi Brenda,

Today I saw the posting you put at the Guffin site between three
and four months ago. I really appreciate your posting of the obituary
for John B. Franklin Guffin. And I have some material on George R.
and Mary R. Guffin Hall which I would like to exchange with you.
Meanwhile, could you tell me how you descend from the Halls. I know
of their sons, Ernest and Clarence, and their daughters, Modena and
Ruth. Anything you have on them would be much appreciated. I knew
one of Ruth's sons and am still in correspondence with his widow.
Regards, R. L. Guffin

Regarding John B. Franklin Guffin. My wife is a descendant also via his son Edwin Theodore Guffin. I am in possession of the Guffin Family In America book and might be able to answer your question. Can you give me a little more detail? There are seventeen (17) Guffins named James in the book.

You can reply here or directly to me at phillips1435@msn.com

Do you have a James married to Almira? He was born in Scotland. Dates unknown, his son Charles Curtis was born in Auburn, NY in 1834. We don't know what happened to James, Almira is married to Edmund Sherman in the 1850 census. They later move to Michigan. Any help with James (Mc/Mac)Guffin greatly appreciated.

I checked the Guffin book and found that there are at least a dozen James. Only a few had wives listed and none were named Almira. I also looked for Charles Curtis Guffin but didn't find a match there either. Sorry.

Hi,

I'm interested in learning more about Capt. George R. Hall of the 123rd New York Infantry. Here is his wartime photograph: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8026096@N04/5452174237/

Ron,

The Iowa City Press Citizen wrote a sketch about Captain Hall in their February 3, 1950 issue. It was in the "A Fact A Day About Iowa City" section of the newspaper. It confirms he was born in New York and joined the army with the 123rd New York Volunteers. Later moved to Iowa.

Let me know if you can't find a copy and I will scan and send you mine. My copy is of questionable quality, but will do in a pinch.

Let me know.
