Re: Researching family origins
Hi I was a Guffick prior to my marriage. My dad had relatives in Pickering now deceased. My grandfather was Ronald (I think) - once played football for York City or so the family story goes! I have a brother and Uncle - both Gufficks. I would be interested in any family history. All I have been told is that the name originates from the Scottish McFee and we were an intinerate clan you came South when General Wade built his roads not getting much beyond Yorkshire and the North East by all accounts.

Re: Researching family origins
hi my name is carly, I'm 17 from West Yorkshire. My dad and Grandma are both Gufficks (my dad's called Malcolm and my Grandma is Ruth), but my Grandad departed the family before I was born. He was called Harold Guffick, the same as my Uncle (deceased). I didn't know that our name came from Scotland, my Gran thought it was Icelandic! it would be lovely to hear from you, and hear any more information on our name if you have any. Maybe we might be related!

Re: Researching family origins
Hi Carly, I don't know if I have replied before as I have replied to a few Gufficks & had little response. My family all came from York Father was Reginald & he had two brothers George & Bill & a sister Gladys. We appear to originate somewhere near Pickering in North Yorks & my lot left & went south to York & some others went North to Hartlepool. I have found two possible distant "cousins" Norman & Kevin both in the N.E. Norman Guffick seems to be a black sheep according to his brother Kevin & they don't speak. Norman has started a web site on Guffick's history & you can find it through google. My family is Sally my wife & 3 boys Steve (in New Zealand at present who is a tri-athlete, David, Rugby & cricket & Ian, cycling and we live in Cornwall. Again you can find us on Google. My sister Margaret still lives in Walton Nr wakefield & is a Harrison by marriage. Regards & keep searching

Re: Researching family origins
Hi. My name is Jackie Hatton. I am both a professional historian and an amateur genealogist. My grandmother was Mabel Guffick, daughter of Frank Guffick, who was the son of John (the teacher from Gate Fulford), son of John (the tailor from Thornton-le-Dale), son of John (the barber from Thornton-le-Dale). Both of Frank Guffick's daughters emigrated to Australia after WWII. One (Lena) married an Australian soldier and the other (Mabel) followed to join her on their apple farm in Melbourne Australia). As women of their generation did not keep their maiden names the Guffick name did not head on out to Australia with them - but they do have many descendants.
Thanks for your website Norman - it was helpful to me and is a great resource for those of us pursuing Guffick family history. I'll keep you posted if I find any leads that predate John Guffick the barber.
Cheers, Jackie Hatton (spending Christmas 2005 in Pickering) Living in Amsterdam.

Re: Researching family origins
Hi Jackie,
Does William Atterbury Guffick, originally from Fulford, come into your searches so far?. If so we may be related. Norman Guffick says that we are cousins, I don't know how many times removed though. I have not been researching for a fair while so have we been in contact before?. My dad was Reginald again from York. I still have relatives living in York although I & my family live in Cornwall. If you think we have some link please let me know & I'll fill you in with my branch of the Guffick clan Kind Regards

Re: Researching family origins
Hello Mike, Thanks for your post. Indeed it looks like your William A Guffick was the brother of John Guffick who was my great, great, grandfather. John's son Frank was my great-grandfather and his daughter, Mabel, was my grandmother. Mabel and her sister Lena both migrated to Australia in the sixties, whilst their brothers stayed at home in England.
I will be in Cornwall (Hayle) from July 3-9 with my mother (daughter of Mabel), father and sister. We'd love to compare family history notes if that is possible. Do you have my email address via Ancestry.com? Regards, Jackie H
