Probably only 3 main GUFFEY Lines in U.S.

Yes, the GUFFEY relationship can be very interesting. There are fewer of us (compared to Smith, Brown, Jones, and other lesser used names) than many other family names. Even when our ancestors were alive on the small isle of Colonsay just off the coast of Scotland where we were a part of the small Clan MacFie, there were few MacGUFFIEs. Once the small Clan MacFie was over run, our ancestors were dispossessed of their lands, and became scattered to the Scottish mainland, Ireland and even south to England.

There appears to be three main GUFFEY Lines in the U.S. One of them is our line from which descended most of the Ky. and Mo. GUFFEYs whom you mentioned. We can trace our descent from the McGUFFEY/GUFFEY family which lived on property located in Pittsylvania, Henry and later, after its creation, Patrick Cos., VA. Also the GUFFEYs of Alabama whose ancestor, Ephraim GUFFEY (b. ca. 1765 in VA.), and his descendants who are found in records there are also believed to have descended from this same family in VA. Most of the Ky., MO. and AL. GUFFEYs descended from individuals believed to be brothers and probably children of the old Bute Co., N.C. Ephraim McGUFFEY/Meguffey/Guffey--all three spelling are used in his will--(b. ca. 1695 in VA. d. 1777 in NC) and his wife, Lucy. This Line of GUFFEYs trace their origins back to 1670 in colonial Virginia's Rappahannock Co. (now Essex Co.) and the immigrant, John Maguffe/ie, and his wife, Jane DAVONPORT Maguffe/ie. Interestingly, many of the present-day McGUFFEYs in the U.S. can also trace their origins to John Maguffe/ie and Jane DAVONPORT Maguffe/ie through their son, John MaGuffie (b. ca. 1683), and his wife, Susan EVANS MaGuffie. That family retained the spelling McGUFFEY. This John MaGuffie (b. ca. 1683) was a brother to the above named Ephraim McGUFFEY/Meguffey/Guffey (b. 1695). The purported brothers mentioned above whose father is believed to have been Ephraim McGUFFEY/Meguffey/Guffey (b. 1695) were Henry McGUFFEY, SR. who mrd. Letitia DEARING, Joseph McGUFFEY (who may have been the father of Alabama's Ephraim GUFFEY b. ca. 1765) and Ephraim McGUFFEY/GUFFEY, Junr. (b. ca. 1740. d. ca. 1804/05) who mrd. Nancy. Based upon land records, we know this last named Ephraim and Nancy had lived most of their lives in the area known as Pittsylvania, Henry and Patrick Cos., VA. until the late 1790s when, as elderly adults, they accompanied their adult children to the new State or Commonwealth of KY. settling in Wayne Co. Their ten children produced an abundance of descendants to whom many of the KY., TN. & MO. GUFFEYs can trace our ancestry. From KY. & TN. many of Ephraim & Nancy's descendants migrated to MO., TX., CA. and other western states. Yet, by and large, the GUFFEY name is one of the smallest in numbers of households in the U.S. That's one line of GUFFEYs.

Apparently, the second oldest Line of GUFFEYs in the U.S.is the one which traces its ancestry back to 1738 when William GUFFEY (b. 1698) came to this continent through Philadelphia and eventually settled in Westmoreland Co., PA. That line of GUFFEYs is well documented, and those individuals were well-to-do people and long-time political activists in the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. They produced among others, U.S. Senator Joseph F. GUFFEY, who served in the FDR administration, and his out-spoken sister, Emma GUFFEY MILLER, one-time national Democratic chairwoman from PA. Incidently, she is recorded as the first woman ever nominated for president by a major political party in the U.S. ("Newsweek" magazine, Mar 9, 1970, p. 61.) Many of this line are found in central PA. and they spelled their name GUFFY (sans "e"). Of the Westmoreland Co., PA. family, some were into oil and coal mining from which they made their fortunes. Others moved into the west and dabbled in silver and gold ventures. The little secluded "town" known as Guffey, Colorado, was named after one of them, Col. James McClurg GUFFEY. Actually, he bought the town during its heyday and named it after himself. WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN HISTORY, Vol. 1, 1897-42, p. 493, recorded that James McClurg GUFFEY (1839-1930)was probably the largest individual oil producer in the U.S. and had large bituminous coal holdings. Many of the PA. GUFFEY Line migrated into OH. and IN. Some individual GUFFEY researchers think that either descendants or relatives from this PA. Line were the GUFFEYs who settled in the Shenandoah Valley region of VA. in the mid-1700s having traveled down the Great Wagon Road running from PA. thru Maryland and into s.w. VA. A small number of GUFFEYs still reside in that region of VA. They can trace their ancestry back to the GUFFEYs who lived there in the late 1700s, but their efforts to tie themselves directly to those GUFFEYs found in the records there in the mid-1700s have not been successful due to fewness of definitive records in those counties.

The third large Line of GUFFEYs in the U.S. is that in and from N.C. which trace their origins to brothers, John and Henry GUFFEY, who had lived in Harford and Cecil Cos., Maryland prior to the Revolutionary War. Again some GUFFEY researchers believe that this family are either descendants or relatives of the PA. GUFFEYs. Most of this GUFFEY Line resides in Rutherford Co., N.C. Obviously, many of this line's descendants migrated elsewhere as observed by the settlement in McMinn Co., TN. of brothers, James GUFFEY (b. 1799. d. 1892) who mrd. Ridley FREEMAN; and Thomas F. GUFFEY (b. 1803. d. 1872) who mrd. Nancy CLEMENTS (also spelled Clemmons). Both of these men fathered ten children each. Their parents were John GUFFEY & Elizabeth REED GUFFEY. One of Thomas F. GUFFEY's sons, Eli Morrison GUFFEY (b. 1845. d. 1923), who mrd. Mary Catherine HIGDON, moved to Van Buren Co., Arkansas. They were the parents of twelve children.

So you can see, the number of GUFFEYs may be small, but we're every where--WE'RE EVERY WHERE!

Greetings, Mr. Guffey: I'm sorry about the delay in responding to your posting, but I've just returned from a three-week trip into the west doing genealogy.

Your posting is quite interesting to me. Could you be H. Clark Guffey with June 6 as your birthdate--I'll not write the year. I don't know when or why our relatives and ancestors got their thoughts about the GUFFEY lines, but the one passed along by your father was one I hadn't heard before, and I've heard many. Harland Morris GUFFEY was born April 21, 1890 and died June 1972 in Sutherland, Lincoln Co., NE. He married June 26, 19-- to Myrtle BROWN who was b. Sept 20, 1901. My records show she died July 1970 in North Platte, Lincoln Co., NE. I'd like to add their site of burial if you'd be so kind as to supply it for me.

Your father was the son of Oliver Perry GUFFEY b. Oct 29, 1842 in Caldwell Co., MO. and d. Feb 19, 1914 in Sutherland, Lincoln Co., NE. He married his first wife on April 18, 1872 in Caldwell Co., MO. She was Mahala M. HALE the dau. of Richard HALE. She was b. July 31, 1855 in Caldwell Co., MO. and d. Apr 1, 1884 in Caldwell Co., MO. They had two children:
1) Richard Homer GUFFEY b. Mar 2, 1873 in Caldwell Co., MO. and
2) Lula GUFFEY b. May 14, 1876. She married Lemuel WEAVER.

Oliver Perry GUFFEY married his 2nd wife Oct 8, 1885 in Caldwell Co., MO. Her name was Lydia Ella BROOKS. She was b. in Monroe Co., OH (I don't have the date); and d. Dec 14, 1940 in Sutherland, Lincoln Co., NE. They had four children:
1) James Perry GUFFEY b. Sept 7, 1888 in Lincoln Co., NE. and d. Dec 1978 in Loveland, Larimer Co., CO. He mrd on June 18, 1914 to Florence FEELY. I have only her death date as 1949.

2) Harland Morris GUFFEY b. Apr 21, 1890 and noted at the top--your dad.

3) Edwin Lorenzo GUFFEY b. July 11, 1892 in Lincoln Co., NE. d. Dec 23, 1946. He mrd. in July 1920 to Esther BURKLAND who was b. 1888. I have no other dates for her.

4) Esther Ellen GUFFEY b. Mar 23, 1896 in Lincoln Co., NE. She mrd. on Sept 12, 1921 to James S. BOYLE. I have no other info on them.

Oliver Perry GUFFEY was the son of William GUFFEY & Margaret PILE GUFFEY. William was b. May 4, 1798 in Morgan Co., TN. and d. Feb 15, 1856 buried Guffey Cem., Breckenridge, Caldwell Co., MO. He mrd. on Aug 4, 1828 in Morgan Co., TN to Margaret PILE who was b. Oct 10, 1800 in Morgan Co., TN. She d. Feb 26, 1883 buried Guffey Cem., Breckenridge, Caldwell Co., MO. They had 14 children whose name and dates I've posted elsewhere on this message board. Oliver Perry GUFFEY was the eleventh of their children.

It is not known for certain who William's father was, but it is believed by many GUFFEY genealogists that it was possibly William GUFFEY b. 1786 and his first wife whose name is not known. William GUFFEY b. 1786 is my 3rd g. grandfather through his children by Elizabeth WILLIS GUFFEY b. 1797.

The adult GUFFEYs who lived in Morgan Co., TN. in the early 1800s were brothers to my William. They were the children of Ephraim McGUFFEY/GUFFEY, Junr. b. ca. 1740 and his wife, Nancy. This couple had at least nine children of which my William b. 1786 was the youngest. Ephraim and his children had been born in the Patrick/Henry/Pittsylvania Co. area of VA. Their farm was on the same property, but as the newer counties were created, the property fell in their boundries. Ephraim, Junr. was the son of Ephraim McGuffey/GUFFEY of Va, who was b. ca. 1695 in Essex Co., VA. Ephraim b. 1695 was the son of John MaGUFFIE/MAGUFFEE/MAGUFFE, Senr. b. ca. 1665-70 (all spellings have been found in various documents in Essex Co., VA) and his wife, Susanna EVANS MaGUFFIE. John Senr. b. 1665-70 was the son of John MaGUFFIE/MAGUFFE b. ca. 1640 in Scotland, and his wife, Jane DAVONPORT MaGUFFIE.

That leads us back to the original posting of their being PERHAPS just three (3) main GUFFEY Lines in the U.S. Now you can see which one your family fits into. I hope, Mr. Guffey, that you find the above interesting and helpful to you.

If you have dates and places of the latest generation in this line, I'd really enjoy adding them to my files. If you'd care to share them with me, you can contact me directly at guffeyaj@hotmail.com

You cuz,

Joe

Hello. My grandfather was Chester Franklin Guffey born in Rolla, Missouri on November 15,1919. His father was Hilary B. Guffey (born March 24, 1879, died July 22, 1947). Hilary's father was named James F.(?) Guffey (born 3/18/1848, died January 17, 1925). Any of this sound familiar? Could we be related?
