Hi There, In researching our family tree, we have found the name "Jacob Gudbrandsen Rosby" back 6 generations. It appears the Gudbrandsen name was changed to Braaten when they came to this country. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thankyou, Don Braaten

If you find or have found anything out (since your post was 12 years ago) would you please let me know. I also have that same issue with a relative of mine. We are most likely related ourselves.
Thank you
Jerry Braaten

My grandfathers mother came from Kvamshaugen farm in Hallindal valley. She married Peter Gudbrandsen, Gulbrandsen and America version Gulbrandson in Trogstad/Baastad Ostfold. Her sister, Birgit married and lived in McKinock N.D. just north of Fargo. Her first 3 children were Kvamme and the next two were Braaten's.
Edward Elroy born in 1932 married to Lorna Morris and Ordean Sigval born in 1935.
That is the extent of my information.

Don

Jacob's father would have been Gudbrand.

Jacob would "Gudbrandsen" (Gudbrand's son). Braaten would have been the farm or location they came from.

Norwegian: habitational name from Bråten, a common farm name in southeastern Norway, derived from Old Norse broti ‘land cleared for cultivation by burning’.
