There is a town about ten miles south east from Reicholzheim that has the name of Guggenberg, it is one of 6 in all of Germany. Its very possible my family came from this town. All the other Guggenberg villages are in Barvaria to the South and the East in and around Augsburg and Munchen. At least over 100 miles away..................

Its apparent to me that the Guckenberger family was from around the area of Wurzberg in that area once known as Fraconia. Today in part of Northern Baden and Bayern.

Possibly originating near Reicholzheim. As The oldest record I can find on the name comes from my families village of Reicholzheim (now in Baden) in the 1400's.

Checking a couple german databases I find:

The origins of Guckenberger's of Baden / Bayern "Franconia" Germany

The Origins of the name likley comes from a place, however some places were also given there names by the people that came or owned the land.
NO VILLAGES IN GERMANY HAVE THE GUCKENBERGER NAME TODAY.

Can anyone help figure out what the name Guggenberger / Guckenberger comes from?

1)Guggenberg 49°40' 9°23' 263.0 miles SW of Berlin
2)Guggenberg 48°20' 11°17' 303.4 miles SSW of Berlin
3)Guggenberg 48°13' 10°43' 319.5 miles SSW of Berlin
4)Guggenberg 48°03' 12°42' 309.9 miles S of Berlin
5)Guggenberg 47°56' 10°19' 344.5 miles SSW of Berlin
6)Guggenberg 47°40' 11°03' 350.6 miles SSW of Berlin

1)Guggenberg this village is located in Bayern but is very close to the Baden border and is located near but west of Reicholzheim, near the Erfa River.
2)Guggenberg this village is about 15 miles N/W of Muechen, Bayern near villages of Kappelhof Erdweg and Hohenzell. Near the Glonn River.
3) Guggenberg this village is located S/W of Augsburg, Bayern near the villages of Mickhausen, Wertachau and Schabmuenchen and almost does not exist today or is very small.
4) Guggenberg is located about 50 miles west of Muenchen, Bayern near Stetten, Meggenthal and Untermeggenthal. This village also is very small possibly absorbed by Bergham.
5) Guggenberg is about 25 miles South/West of ULM west of Muenchen, near the villages of Lachen, Ottobeuren and Leupolz. (Actually in the out skirts of Ottobeuren)
6) Guggenberg This village is South west of Muenchen (30 miles) and S/East of ULM, near the villages of Peustelsau Unternogg, Grossenast and Murnau A. Staffelsee. And has been absorbed by the village of Bad Kohlgrub.

So all but one of the Guggenberg villages are near Muenchen in Southern Bayern. The only other Guggenberg is the number 1 and exists near the Erfa and close to the Main River.

My Guckenbergers From the area of Wertheim, Tauberbichofheim, Mittelfranken and Unterfranken

ORIGINS

It seems my was in the area of Wertheim and Tauber River for many years. I would have thought that there numbers would have been very large in the area. Ther however there are very few, that I can find. They may have moved Eastward towards Wurzberg. Some may have moved south. It looks like I may have found one that may have emmigrated to America From Gruensfeld in 1839.

Emigrant identification 150260
First name Johann
Last name Guckenberger
Emigration year 1839
Last place of residence Grünsfeld
Profession Gastwirt
Archive Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe

It is possible that the early families of Unterfranken and Mittelfranken are related.
I find a Gucgenberger in 1550 Buchbrunn, Unterfranken which is about ten miles east of Wuerzburg. on the River Main.

1563 Marktsteft, Unterfranken, Bayern

Also 1604 Of Weickersheim, , Jagstkreis, Wuerttemberg which is not that far. It is on the Tauber above Rothenberg OD Tauber and Just south of Schaftersheim east of Elpersheim.

I find in 1617, (1605?) Guggenberger Unteraltenbernheim Mittelfranken which is about 30 miles south of Wuerzburg east of Rothenberg O.D. Tauber. (also and in 1618 they are in Windsheim, Mittelfranken)

Other than the Reicholzheim family this is the earliest records I could find for the name. These villages are all very close to the area my family is from and I would guess that the familiy is related.

Guckenberger-Guggenberger surname "man from Look Mountain"

Posted: 6 May 2007 8:08PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Guckenberger, Guggenberger
Guckenberger name is likley taken from the village were the person was from. Such as KUELSHEIMER and REICHOLZHEIMER persons coming from Kuelsheim and REICHOLZHEIM

"Guckenberger" left the village he was from "Guggenberg / Guckenberg" and and though spelled somewhat differently (not really important), when he went to the new village he was given or took the name Guckenberger.

With conjecture, it's possible to imagine, as the family had no surname his brother who may have moved to a different village could have become a MUELLER because of his occupation.

The oldest Guckenberger I can find is Guckenberger from REICHOLZHEIM / Bronnbach in the 1300's. This was in the time in this area surnames were being taken. Does anyone have any earlier documentation?

I am no linguist and I don't speak German but do know that Gucken means "LOOK" Berg means "MOUNTAIN"

Perhaps Guckenberger-Guggenberger surname means "man from Look Mountain"

Its also possible that, as there were several villages named Guggenberg, not knowing when they were actually named some took the name of the family. It would be interesting to find out when these names were given to these villages as well.

There are several places called "Look Out Mountains" in the States as well, as the name is self explanatory.

The closest village of the name Guggenberg to Reicholzheim or Bronnbach ( a few miles away) would have been Guggenberg Coordinates 49°40' 9°23', 263.0 miles SW of Berlin its tycnically in Bayern on the Border with Baden or B-W
