SAYS SAMPLE OF BOOZE PUT DEAL THROUGH
Wisconsin | Grand Rapids | Wood County Tribune

The attractive sample of moonshine which Chris Guckenberger alleges that Carl Hiersch brought, to him for a test, was responsible for Guckenberger buying several gallons of the home made liquor according to the Story told by
Gutkenberger and 'his wife in Judge Getts court) Tuesday afternoon. Both Mr, and Mrs. Guckenberger testified that they had been dealing with Hiersch in the purchase of the moonshine and stated that they, in turn had sold it to others.
Guckenberger recently paid a fine in the circuit court here, for selling the moonshine. At that time he told Judge Park that he didn't know the man's name from whom he had purchased it. Judge gave him -two days to find Out the name with a thirty day jail sentence waiting him if he didn't bring it in. Guckenberger -returned within the allotted time stating
that it was Cari Hiersch who had sold him the liquor. All of the parties live in Marshfield.
Get Adjournment Hiersch, who was represented by Atty Wayne Doming, of Marshficld, asked for an adjournment of the case, the judge setting Feb. l?th as the day when he will reappear with additional witnesses. The testimony, of Mr. and Mrs. Guckenberger led Hiersch and his attorney to secure more evidence for their side of the
case before it is brought to trial. Woman Did Dealng
Mrs. Guckenberger states that she did all the dealing with Hiersch for the liquor, and that he owed them a note for $55 when he first came and asked .them to take some moonshine in payment of it, as be wanted some money to buy groceries. She. stated that her husband lasted the moonshine that she alleges Hiersch brought, and that he pronounced it j
to be a first class product, After which she states .purchases. She state that the price
she paid was $15 a gallon and added that she still owned Hiersch $60 on the deals she had made with him. Mr. Hiersch did not appear on the stand.

RAISES FINE ALFALFA CROP.
Conrad Guckenberger on County Line Road

The Times office received a call from Conrad Guckenberger, a farmer residing on the road between Wood and Marathon county on
Route 6, Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Guckenberger coming in to show the editor a sample of alfalfa grown on his farm this summer.
He brought a sheaf along which was nearly three feet in length, well headed. Although we have a better acquaintance with oatmeal and such like than with alfalfa we should judge it to be as good a feeding crop as any clover.

Going to Waupun.
At a recent meeting of the Waupaca Business Mens' Association a letter from A. Guckenberger, was read. It was addressed to F. W. Albright of MarshField, the writer saying that he was ready to name Mead's murderers to Mr. Albright and Col. Upham, of Marshfield, and a committee of Waupaca citizens—but no sheriffs. The Waupaca Business men accordingly appointed E. Coolidge and F. W. Spencer, the stenographer, to go to Waupun and listen to the convict's story. Guckenberger still claims he can show where the bank notes were secreted, and alleges that Pat Carr went through the window and shot Mead, and that three others staid outside to watch and share the plunder. Any investigation that may be made of the Meade murder will be watched with a good deal of interest in Stevens Point, as it has always been thought that the notorious Jack Reilly, who at that time lived here, was in some way interested in the affair.

Wisconsin Pioneer Guckenberger's

Many of the Newspaper Gleanings seem to Match some of the Guckenbergers in the World Connect Program. From Milwaukee, Marshfield, and Appleton.
In particular there is a family from Milwaukee that is from Darmstadt, Which is near or possibly in a once known area of Germany called Franconia. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darmstadt

The descendant being Sebastian Guckenberger. This Sebastian Guckenberger must have came over with his parents and had siblings and were WI pioneers.

Probably related too Andrew Guckenberg

Andrew Jacob Guckenberg was born on September 16, 1853 in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He was the son of Conrad Guckenberger and Katherine Helferich. He married Pauline Marie Theby who was born on September 22, 1862 in Stanley, WI

See http://jim.ball.net/gucka1.htm

The 1880 Census lists

Chris Guckenburger abt 1844 36
Kate Guckenburger 33
Adam Guckenburger 12
Conrad Guckenburger 11
Kate Guckenburger 9
Susan Guckenburger 7
Anna Guckenburger 5
Lizzie Guckenburger 3
Chris Guckenburger 2M

So it would appear that this Chris Guckenburger abt 1844 is a brother to Andrew Jacob Guckenberg of Marshfield and also a brother to Sebastian Guckenberger of Milwaukee.

The 1880 Census also lists

Peter Guckenberg abt 1845 35
Mary Guckenberg 33
Conrad Guckenberg 17
Mary Guckenberg 14
Peter Guckenberg 12
John Guckenberg 8
Eva Guckenberg 6
Henry Guckenberg 1
Adam Guckenberg 3

This seems to be another brother of Chris Guckenburger and Andrew Jacob Guckenberg of Marshfield and also a brother Sebastian Guckenberger of Milwaukee

So what happened to the father of these boys Conrad Guckenberger?

I find
Conrad Guckenberger
Occupation Blacksmith
b. abt 1813 Age 40
Sex M
Arrived 1 Nov 1853
Origin Germany
Port Bremen
Ship The Republic

Did he ever come to Wisconsin?

The Students At St. Johns school are looking for pictures, some are descendants of the Marshfeild Guckenberger line.

Re: Wisconsin Pioneer Guckenberger's -Conrad Guckenberger son of Jacob DARMSTADT in Hesse, Germany

There is a Jacob and Son Conrad / Konrad from DARMSTADT in the village of Weiher in the Municipality of Moerlenbach This Konrad Guckenberg seems to very closely resemble that of the Wisconsin Pioneer Family of Guckenbergers Conrad (Kurt/Curt) Guckenberger. I suspect He is likely one and the same as his disappearance from Germany also coincides with his arrival in NY and his birth date is very close to the same as well.

Moerlenbach is a municipality in the Kreis Bergstraße, in the Governmental district of DARMSTADT in Hesse, Germany. It is situated in the Odenwald, about 8 km southeast of Heppenheim, and about 22 km north of Heidelberg. "Weiher" a very small village is 1.9 miles S/E of the "Village" of Morlenbach / Moerlenbach / Mörlenbach.

www.moerlenbach.de
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6rlenbach

Its possible that Konrads father this Jacob Guckenberger came from Bayern, North Baden or Wuertemberg / Wurttemberg as the village of birth is unknown.

======================================

Some of the Wisconsin family was living in Winnebago, Wisconsin in 1870. It wouldn't surprise me if the Migration of this "Conrad Guckenberger arrived 1853 family did a migration pattern like NY>OH>WI, NY>OH>ILL>WI or NY>PA>OH>ILL>WI remember Wisconsin was just being settled in many parts around 1850. So Conrad GUCKENBERGER may have stayed or died in a previous state. He also may have had other children in other states. The naming patterns of this family are also similar.

Did his brothers Johann Nikolaus Guckenberger and Johann Guckenberger come to the USA about 1850-1890?

Note Guckenberg VS Guckenberger in the census records......I imagine Guckenburg / Guckenburger and Guggenberger etc also apply when searching for this name.

Did brother Johann (Hans) Guckenberger also have a middle name?

Castle Garden also Lists

Christian Guckenberg age 22 arrived Aug 1868

U. S. occupation authorities shipped 800 German refugees back to the Soviet zone last night.
About 8OOO of them have been captured and turned back in the past month. Army authorities confessed, however, they are unable to cope with the great number fleeing the Soviet zone, and estimated well more than half the linecrossers escape detection.
M. Guckenberger, chief border inspector at Hof, said that starvation in the Soviet area is the main cause of this new burden on an already over-populated American zone.

Hello Nancy,
I am not related to the GRUBERS. There are several thousand GRUBERS in Germany today. The Largest portion live in Bayern (Bavaria) but they live all over Germany.
I am puzzled by Austria/Germany. I suspect she would have been b. in either Germany, Austria, or Austria-Hungary. Not Austria/Germany. She could have been a ethnic German b. in Austria or Austria-Hungary which would make more sense.
Have You found her Manifest? Where did she live in the USA?
Many Ethnic Germans lived in Hungary Proper and through out the area, some known as Donauschwabens, which include many GRUBERS........ Could this be a possibility?
Did her Parents come to the USA? Who did she stay with when she arrived? How did she marry?
Best regards
Kurt
