Adele, we must be cousins! It should be pretty easy to figure out how we are related. I am working on a family tree. I haven't made it public yet because I've only just started a few days ago. I am not able to find any documented info on Anna at all. Today, I think I found Matteo's parents names, Pasquale G and Carolina Biondolillo. Do you know if that is correct? You are welcome to email me directly - alfischbach@msn.com.

Wow, thank you! That fills in some holes, especially dates and middle names. I wonder if it was unusual to marry your cousin back then? Or maybe they didn't know? I wanted to confirm that it was Carolina that you were speaking of who was the youngest of 11 children (not Matteo)? If the info is readily available to you, could you please check to see how many siblings Matteo had. The family says 2, but I found another born 11 yrs earlier that no one knows about. Maybe died young.

I've challenged myself to try and find living relatives in Alia and Contessa Entellina before my trip to Sicily in June.

Do you have a tree that includes these records or is this info included in your 10 years of notes? Or did you look it up specifically for me? Whichever it is, I thank you.

It was Matteo that was 1 of 11.

Pasquale Gucciione b. 7/24/1811 and Maria Carolina Biondolillo b. 12/6/1815, and were married 11/16/1834
Children:
Rosalia Ignazia b. 5/25/1835
Rosalia Ignazia b. 5/9/1837
Gioachino b. 3/5/1839
Giuseppa b. 2/27/1840
Maria Grazia b. 6/6/1842
Anna b. 6/24/1844
Concetta Maria b. 9/22/1847
Providenza b. 2/26/1850
Gioachino b. 10/30/1852
Biagio Maria b. 9/28/1855
Matteo b. 6/10/1858
At least 4 of the sisters married, Rosalia to Vitale Allesandra, Giuseppa tp Giudeppe Cardinale, Maria Grazia to Placito Mule of Villalba, and Anna to Francesco Giuseppe Federico.

As to marrying cousins, it was not unusual, especially that distant. I have found a few instances of 1st cousins marrying. Alia was relatively isolated over the last 400 years, founded about 1624. By blood or marriage, many Aliese are related.
I was told when I visited there in 2004, that the local dialect of Sicilian spoken in Alia was specific to it, and was not immediately understood by the villagers from around it. Of course today, most if not all can speak standard Italian, when they speak among themselves, they speak their own dialect.

Of course you know that Contessa is an Arbaresh town, desecendants of Albanian mercenaries from the 1400s. There are about 7 or 8 towns like it. The oldtimers speak a completely different language, combination of Albanian, Greek and Sicilian. the founders of the Monteleone hotel in New Orleans were from Contessa. And for a long time many of the people were Greek Orthpdox, and not Catholic.

I have done extensive research on Alia. I am not a Guccione, my ggg-grandmother was Nicosia Guccione. I think she was born in Alia, though she lived in Cerda for a while. She should have died in Alia, but have not been able to find her there. I even know that she died between 1830 and 1834, but not where.
I have more infomation on Gucciones of Alia. My interest in Alia stems from my grandfather was born there in 1880.
