I found an amazing discovery today! Lancelot South born 1789 (his father was John South of Latton in Essex, John South married Ann Archer, sole heriess of John Archer of Ongar Park Hall in Essex). Anyway, Lancelot South married Jane Gubbins in 1817. Lancelot and Jane South then ASSUMED the surname of ARCHER-BURTON on receiving the property of his godfather, Lancelot Burton, of Maida Vale in Middlesex as a requirement of the King's Sign Manual. Therefore, Lancelot South became, Lancelot Archer Burton. Have more on this, including coat of arms info if you are interested, please email me or post a response.

My husband's family also descends from this family through Leonard Velten Archer-Burton. Where did you find the information on the SOUTH family line? I'd be interested in talking with you privately.

did a bunch of research on this family because my stepgrandfather was a Warren Archer-Burton, Lancelot Archer Burton’s grandson.
The proof that he was a “South” was from Jonn Constable, (the famous artist) Lancelot Archer Burton changed his name from Lancelot South to Archer Burton to accept an inheritance. Also of importance, Lancelot Archer Burton purchased the authentic masterpiece “The White Horse” which is worth millions now. Here is an excerpt from a footnote in the Constable diaries where I learned about the name change. There are other records that show this but this is what tipped me off. I have much much more information and cannot quite remember all of it, but I have a file and CD/website I created about it. I could probably send you a copy, not sure what you are looking for.
Let me know.
