I am researching my husbands family tree. This is what I have so far:

Auguste Henri Gsell also known as Heinrick Gsell b. 1-10-1879 in Bischwiller, France, emigrated to the US via Ellis Island on 4-1-1905 on the La Lorraine. He married Lily Louise Wolf and they lived in Mineral City, OH. Henry (as he was called) died 5-11-1956.

He and Lily had 3 children:

Orpah Louise b. 4-11-1920 m. Floyd Rudolph Fiddler (my husbands grandparents)
Clara
Carl b. 11-2-1923 d. 4-1983

Orpah and Floyd had 2 daughters:

Linda Lou b. 9-3-1943 m. Lawrence Tomcsanyi of PA they moved to IL and had 5 children (my husbands parents)
Audrey Sue m. Bruce Weaver of OH they live in Fl and have 3 sons.

If anyone has any information on the Gsell of France I'd be thrilled to talk to you.

Dear madam,

I read your message asking someone who could inform you about gsell's in France.
My name is Christian G'SELL (with an apostrophe). I am living in Nancy (Lorraine, France), but my ancestors are coming from Alsace (not Bischwiller but Colmar.
My genealogical tree counts 10 generations, starting in 1513.

Do you kow if your husband ancestors have any relationship with people in Colmar ?

Yours sincerely

Christian

Hello Christian,

My family is Gsell from Colmar. My great grandmother was Catherine Gsell, who married Jacob Straumann in Colmar about 1870. They moved to Chicago, Illinois, in the late 1800's. Her mother was Catherine Henninger, who married a Gsell man. She moved to New Jersey, with her son, Jean Frederick, and his wife. Are we related?

Thank you,
Vernelle

Hi Vernelle,
Maybe Christian and you are not related but we are. My grandfather William Straumann was one of Jacob and Catherines sons.

Hello Michelle,

Orpah Fiddler is my husbands grandmother.

Are you also doing genealogy? I'm sort of the unofficial family historian.

If you have any questions I'll do the best I can to help you.

Hi again

Well I began searching the family to find who built the house we bought. We were told that orpah grew up in the house nad lived there all of her life. We had been told that the house had been in her family so we assumed her father or grandfather built it. But then I read that her father, Auguste Henri Gsell, was born in 1879 in France. He could not have built it. We were told it was built in 1880. So they must have bought the farm from someone else. Or perhaps Auguste Gsell came from France to live with someone else in the family who owned the farm already? Any clues? Were there any relatives here before Auguste came over from France?
We are really curious about the people who built and lived in the house. It's our first home. I just love century homes.

thanks

michelle

Hi Michelle,
My great grandmother's brother was named August Gsell. I don't know much about him, except that his mother, Catherine Henninger Gsell, and his brother, Jean Frederick Gsell (known as Fred), came over from Colmar, Alsace, to live in New Jersey. His father,Daniel Gsell, had apparently already died at that time. August would have been born somewhere around 1850. Perhaps, he is the father or uncle of the other August.

Hello Michelle and Vernelle,

Auguste Henri Gsell was born in Bischwiller, France in on 1-10-1879. He married Lily Louise Wolf b. 1882, she was the daughter of Gottlieb Wolf and Gottlieb is the one who built the house in Mineral City that Orpah and Floyd lived in.

I've been working on the Gsell family and their ancestors and descendants for a while now. I think the Colmar Gsells are a different branch of Gsells from the Bas-Rhin area of France.

I don't have a lot of information on Gottlieb Wolf, I do have information on his wife Margaret Stahl and her brothers.

Hope this helps you both. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me at mjtpawprint@juno.com
