Gsell means a comrade tried and true. As for our ancestor he won a major battle as was given the title GSELL.

yes, you are rigth. Gsell is the shortened form of "Geselle" which means comrade, fellow, also a learned craftsman is a "Gselle". The word is still in use, especially as "Junggeselle" which an unmarried man and in the word "Gesellschaft" = Company.

Thanks for answering my message. My family's
name was spelled G'Sell. Maybe there were 2 different
families. Do you know anything about this family
book for Gsell's? How would I find more information
on it? Thanks again for replying. Edna

Hello Bernt,

good news, we are cousins.
My name is Christian G'SELL from Nancy (France)
Your anscestor Francois Mathias is also on my genealogical tree but I am from another branch.
Francois Mathias was the brother of Francois-Joseph GSELL who was leather maker in Mutzig, and this Francois-Joseph (born 1735, died 1795) is my direct ancestor at the 6th generation.
By the way, I know the ancestors of Francois Mathias up to 8 generation, from 1513.
Could we exchange about our family ?
Yours sincerely

Christian

Hi Christian,

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply but I have a 2 year old that keeps me pretty busy. I don't have much information
on my family because my dad passed away when I was
15yrs old and I never knew my grandparents. My dad's
name was Edward William G'Sell DOB: 02-18-1914 and
date of death 07/1977. My grandfather's name was
William W. G'Sell DOB and DOD unknown. I just recently
got information from the Social Security administration with
my grandfather's name otherwise I did not know it. I believe
William lived in St. Louis Mo area. My dad Edward had
rental property in St Louis Mo also. But I lived in Southern
Illinois until I was 37yrs old. My grandmother's name
was Alma M Fricke and I met some of her relatives in
Rockwood, Illinois. I know this is very little information
but this is all I have. If you have anything to help me
please let me know. Thanks for responding.
